Toxic workplace behaviour can unravel even the most tightly woven fabric of company culture.
Left unchecked, it can seep into the very core of an organisation, corroding morale, productivity, and, ultimately, success.
Recognising and effectively addressing toxic individuals is paramount for fostering a healthy work environment where everyone can thrive.
- Consistent Negativity: Toxic individuals often perpetuate a culture of negativity, whether through incessant complaints, cynicism, or pessimism. They thrive on spreading discontent and sowing seeds of discord among colleagues.
- Undermining Trust: Watch out for those who habitually gossip, spread rumours, or undermine team trust. Toxic individuals often thrive on creating rifts and fostering mistrust among coworkers.
- Lack of Accountability: Toxic people frequently deflect responsibility, blame others for their mistakes, and evade accountability. They may display a pattern of shifting blame or refusing to take ownership of their contributions to problems.
- Manipulative Behavior: Be wary of individuals who employ manipulative tactics to advance their agenda at the expense of others. They may engage in gaslighting, manipulation, or emotional blackmail to exert control and dominance over their peers.
- Resistance to Feedback: Toxic individuals often resist constructive feedback and are unwilling to acknowledge their shortcomings. They may react defensively, dismiss criticism outright, or even retaliate against those who dare to challenge them.
- Set Clear Expectations: Establish clear boundaries and expectations for behaviour in the workplace, emphasising the importance of mutual respect, collaboration, and professionalism.
- Direct Communication: Address toxic behaviour head-on through direct and candid communication. Provide specific examples of the behaviour in question and articulate its impact on individuals and the broader team.
- Establish Consequences: Clearly outline the consequences of continued toxic behaviour, emphasising that it will not be tolerated in the organisation. Be prepared to enforce these consequences if necessary, including termination.
- Provide Support: Offer support and resources to the toxic individual and those affected by their behaviour. This may include coaching, counselling, or conflict resolution interventions to help facilitate positive change.
- Lead by Example: As a leader, embody the values and behaviours you wish to see in others. Foster a culture of transparency, accountability, and mutual respect, modelling the kind of conduct you expect from your team.
Organisations can cultivate a culture of positivity, collaboration, and productivity by proactively identifying and addressing toxic behaviour.
Empower your team to recognise the signs of toxicity and take decisive action to create a workplace where everyone can thrive.

8 个月Because I've been in a toxic workplace I decided to drastically change my professional environment and did a major switch from a corporate position to Diving and later Kitesurfing. During these changes I got to know a few workplaces and was faced with extreme uncertainty relative to what I would find in my new workplaces. Due to this experience I created www.wescorit.com, a platform where workers can rate and review their workplaces in order to help people in the same position I found myself several times when switching jobs, and also help companies improve their workplaces which I would also find a valuable tool when I had to manage several teams and departments. Help create better workplaces by going on to wescorit.com and rating yours!

9 个月Absolutely agree... A toxic environment can demoralise and alienate even the most dedicated and resourceful members... people who are suffering effects of such toxicity eventually choose to leave the environment. And when an organization starts to lose genuine assets, it starts making its journey towards doom.... I'm so glad that coaches like you are talking about sensitive issues like this, that mean so much to the fabric of the organization. Especially when toxicity exists in top management, employees cannot say it openly. They carry on as long as they can, then leave.. Thank you sir
