Determine your own language learning path

There are a number of factors to take into consideration when committing to language learning. Check out two different ways to support your decisions below.

 1. THE ?HOW I VIEW MYSELF” APPROACH IN LANGUAGE LEARNING

A specialized language coaching approach for those who feel uncertain concerning language learning goals or can’t figure out where they got stuck on the journey. Following one of these items per month can support the turn-around.

View yourself as a language learner / user based on the extent you:

IGNORE the nay-sayer in your head:

Don’t give in to ’Yeah, well, no-one in the family ever did speak good English, right…?’

IDENTIFY core issues attached to target language usage:

I think it is all about self-confidence, focusing energies and it will affect how others see me.

IMPROVE your language learning awareness:

I can’t learn grammar using just tables and rules. I need lots of examples. This means…

INTERNALIZE the successes you have had:

I remember my colleague, Zac, once  listened to my presentation - I’ll speak to him again. I have to rehearse definitely. Deadline is looming near.

IMITATE and apply ideas succcessful language users put into effect:

Andrea always looks up great phrases to use for a meeting. I’ll ask her where and how she does that.

IMPLEMENT a transformation process in your thinking about yourself:

Well, I never thought about it, but actually my pronunciation is not at all that bad. So that’s OK. What else…?

INTEGRATE workplace learning with a holistic view of yourself:

I could combine freetime and work pursuits using English - and double the rewards.

INNOVATE and try out new methods you have never attempted to tackle:

Peter mentioned a new app… it could be interesting. Better than a workbook.

IMPACT on your environment (colleagues, business partners):

They’ll think I’m more to the point, additionally meetings, conf.calls will get shorter, I suppose.

INITIATE a new approach in the workplace landscape:

It’s OK to call colleagues’ attention to new ideas and try to get support from the relevant department – I always wanted to ask Julia about various online options.

IMPRESS yourself over time with the stamina and inventiveness of yourself:

Wow, I really nailed it! Got through the call and I’m sending an offer tomorrow.

How many of the above are an outright YES for you?

 2. TIME AND ACCESS

An additional infographic to shape your thinking about issues when making decisions, committing to language learning: flexibility, access is also essential nowadays.

It is worth taking the time and effort to build on independent language learning. As you will see, it pays to be pro-active when you can. Who says someone knows best how you learn best?

One of the latest buzzwords in workplace learning is supporting the independent learning approach, informal learning - label it as you will – so take the opportunity and take steps the L&D / HR department might not have thought of. It is your learning, it is your responsibility. How can your ideas, ideals, goals and expectations go hand in hand with those of your organization?
