SEE FOR YOURSELF!
Get this…According to the CDC it was estimated that in the next 10 years type 2 diabetes will increase by at least 54% to more than 56 million Americans, another 84 million have prediabetes, , 50% of individuals will require insulin to control their diabetes, annual deaths will climb to 38% and total annual medical cost related will increase by 53% which is an increase of more than 600 Billion dollars
What do we do?
If you are an employer, insurer or wellness company these numbers must, at the very least cause you to sit up and take notice. Most importantly Type 2 diabetes is PREVENTABLE AND REVERSABLE.
Here are 3 easy steps to help reduce Type 2 diabetes
Step 1
Know your waist size, 85% of the population does not know their waist size and most do not even know where their waist is located! I found this to be true after measuring waist sizes for over 25 years. Keeping track of one’s waist size can be one of the most important factors in avoiding this deadly disease.
Step 2
Get employees and customers to focus on waist size not weight or BMI only, weight can fluctuate daily as 50 to 60% of all body weight is fluid, fat holds lots of fluid so the more fat the more fluid weight, diets can help to reduce overall weight, but they do not necessarily reduce the size of your waist. Weight loss contest work to help reduce overall employee weight but adding waist/height ratios help to reduce risk factors and health care cost.
Step 3
Waist to Height Ratio vs. BMI
There have been numerous scientific studies that support that WHtR is a better indicator to predict risk related to Diabetes and Heart Disease, than just using the age old BMI formula. So why are companies like the AHA and ADA so reluctant to add this formula guideline? Until organizations and medical professionals get behind offering more effective methods/tools of determining specific risk factors associated with weight then all of us who are working out and gaining lean muscle tissue or have body types that have higher portions of muscle are going to fall into the over-weight and even obese categories.
On the other hand there are those who fall into the normal range on the BMI chart but a large percentage of their body fat is around their waist....very dangerous! yet these individuals are considered healthier.
Why is this important? because your insurance premiums and health related scores and rates are based in part currently just on BMI's.
Adding WHtR in addition to BMI's would offer more insight into true risk factors and who is at risk.
It is understandable that the time involved in calculating a mathematical formula is far less than the time it might take to measure a waist.
So how do you obtain WHtR accurately & quickly?
