Despair in the workplace, nowhere to turn to, and out of options what do you do?

In this article, I want to give you a few different scenarios that commonly occur in the workplace. Do any of these relate to you, do you read these and think yes I am that person? When you feel stuck and you don't know which direction to turn, there is hope so read on. ???

Scenario 1

What do you do, when you are in a job that offers you everything but provides you with nothing? I am talking about jobs, where you are promised the earth, you apply for the job and get the job offer, you feel so happy because the current job you are in is a nightmare, leaving you feeling stressed and irritable, and you feel undervalued and underappreciated. So you decide to take the job but, after a few weeks of getting to know your colleagues you find out the grass is not always greener on the other side.?

You start to hear the office gossip, and you’re warned about a person or persons to avoid.? You find out your departmental supervisor isn’t as friendly as you hoped. They put pressure on you and your team, it causes an atmosphere at work.? You want to do a good job, but the constant feeling of pressure soon has you lacking in confidence.?

You have been in this situation before in previous jobs and you had hoped that this job would be different, what do you do? Do you keep your head down and stick it out, or do you muster the energy from somewhere to start looking for another job in the hope that it will be different and you will be appreciated more?

You start to hear the office gossip, and you’re warned about a person or persons to avoid.

Scenario 2

You are a hard-working corporate professional, you have been in the same job for five years and you have been working towards the promotion and climbing the ladder.? You keep your head down, and do everything you can to be recognised for your hard work. You work longer hours, and weekends, and help out your team members with all the things you need to do, to be recognised.?

Then the time comes for promotion, you feel confident, and you have had excellent feedback from your manager. Only you find that you have been overlooked and the recruit who has been in the job for six months on a lower pay grade has been given the promotion, without even applying for it.?

You feel like dying inside, your energy levels and confidence tumble, and you feel worthless.? You have a mixture of anger and sadness, you feel betrayed by your work family. What’s worse is you can’t leave this feeling at the door of the office, and when you take it home, you take it everywhere as it's constantly on your mind. You feel worthless, can you relate to this??

Only you find that you have been overlooked and the recruit who has been in the job for six months on a lower pay grade has been given the promotion, without even applying for it.?

Scenario 3

You have been working for the same company for a few years, and you recently got promoted, it’s your first promotion and you could not be happier. You start your new role with a new manager, but very quickly you notice things are not the same as they were in your previous role.?

Your new manager is constantly looking over your shoulder and monitoring your work. You know how to do the job inside out because you have experience already. But the manager thinks differently, they ask you to change things because they feel it's better. You disagree and try to explain why, but they’re not interested in your opinion. When you try to disagree they often mention your future in the company, so you decide not to speak up out of fear of being pushed out.??

You feel like you have a monkey on your back permanently, and you start to dread the thought of going to work because you know that you're being watched. You start to lose sleep and feel your weekends are ruined because you always have the thought at the back of your mind, wondering what will happen when you go to work on Monday.

You have been working hard on a project all week and as usual, you are having to make changes at the request of your boss, so you obey instructions as usual. It gets to Friday and you have a trip away planned, you are looking forward to it. But your boss comes and says the changes don’t work and you have to change it back, and the deadline is Monday morning which means you have to work all weekend.?

You feel angry, because you knew that the changes would not work, and you are now having to put in extra work over the entire weekend and have to cancel the trip.? You are starting to feel depressed because you feel your worth isn’t recognised and you now feel trapped in the role you are in, instead of it feeling like a promotion it feels more like a prison. You don’t have the energy or the time to look for work elsewhere.?

But your boss comes and says the changes don’t work and you have to change it back, and the deadline is Monday morning which means you have to work all weekend.?

Can you relate??

These three scenarios are real scenarios of clients who have come to me for help, they reached out at a time when they felt despair and lost their direction. Perhaps whoever is reading this can relate in some way but you would not comment in fear that someone may read it, even the possibility of liking the post, gives you too much fear that you choose to leave it and just keep your head down.?

This is wrong, no one should have to feel like this, you need to rediscover your worth.? There may be times when you feel like you are out of options, but believe me that could not be further from the truth. You may feel deflated, and you just don’t have the motivation to look for something else, perhaps the fear that you are found to be looking for another job is off-putting in case you are discovered and pushed out.??
