Protecting Consumers: ??

Calling all suppliers: Minister for Energy Consumers Miatta Fahnbulleh hosted a roundtable with suppliers as well as Citizens’ Advice and Ofgem, as she seeks to support the most vulnerable this winter.

The message: she pressed suppliers on their existing plans to support households struggling with their bills, including ways to clearly promote debt advice and financial support available to their customers. The Minister also asked suppliers for a national campaign to alert customers to the financial support available this winter.

The long-term: only our mission for clean, homegrown power can give our country the energy independence we need, and families and businesses the energy security they deserve.

But: while we’ve hit the ground running – lifting the onshore wind ban, consenting solar and setting the largest ever budget for our renewables auction – this change will take time.

That’s why: we are targeting support to those who need it most now with the £150 Warm Home Discount, expected to support three million low-income homes.

Update for the oil and gas industry: ??

Stability: we announced plans for new environmental guidance for oil and gas firms to provide stability for industry, support investment, protect jobs, deliver economic growth, and meet its climate obligations, as the North Sea transitions to its clean energy future.

Clarity: government will consult on new guidance, concluding the consultation by spring 2025. Engagement with industry, workers, trade unions, and civil society will provide clarity and certainty for the industry.

Swiftly: the guidance is necessary in light of a Supreme Court ruling, and government is acting swiftly so that decisions on oil and gas development consents can be made.

Minister for Energy Michael Shanks said: “we were elected with a mandate to deliver stability, certainty and growth. Every action we take will be in pursuit of that. We will consult at pace on new guidance that takes into account the Supreme Court’s ruling on Environmental Impact Assessments, to enable the industry to plan, secure jobs, and invest in our economy.”

Office for Clean Energy Jobs: ??

Seat at the table: Energy Secretary Ed Miliband and Minister for Industry Sarah Jones convened leaders from major unions including Unite, GMB, UNISON, RMT, Prospect and TUC to outline our ambition to launch the Office for Clean Energy Jobs, a new team dedicated to supporting workers in the clean energy sector.

Sound familiar? Modelled on the success of the Biden Administration’s Office of Jobs, the DESNZ-based team will work closely with Skills England to support the transition to a clean energy economy, so it creates good jobs for British workers and industrial communities.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said: “making Britain a clean energy superpower is not just about lower bills and energy independence - it is about creating good industrial jobs across our country.”

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband in Brazil: ??

Looking ahead: the Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband, who is taking personal control of the UK’s climate negotiations later this year, met key figures from the Brazilian Government to position the UK as a trusted partner to help deliver an ambitious G20 Presidency and COP30.

Branching out: he also saw how the Amazon Fund is supporting the Quilombola in Abaetetuba develop sustainable production practices for small farms and indigenous peoples, who are the best stewards of the forests.

Mobilising finance: during the visit he spoke with business too, hosting a renewables-focused roundtable with energy companies to discuss the economic opportunities the clean energy transition presents. There was a further roundtable focused on mobilising finance for the clean energy transition which was attended by the Brazilian Ministry of Finance and the Brazilian Development Bank.

Scotland in Focus: ??

Capital city: Minister for Energy Michael Shanks visited the UK Government Hub in Edinburgh, Queen Elizabeth House, hosting a roundtable with the renewable sector to discuss how we build on Scotland’s status as a world leader in?renewable energy. He also had the opportunity to engage with DESNZ staff based in Scotland’s capital.

And another city: he also spent time in Aberdeen where he held a roundtable with the oil & gas sector, reiterating our support for the North Sea’s clean energy future. The Minister also met with DESNZ and NSTA staff based in the Granite City.

And an island: Minister for Climate Kerry McCarthy visited the Orkney Islands, where she saw how emerging technologies harnessing wind, waves and tidal currents are to help the UK deliver more secure, homegrown energy.

And another city: after a quick stop in Inverness, she visited the Natural Capital Laboratory near Loch Ness where she witnessed how protecting and restoring our natural land plays an important role in combatting climate change and reducing emissions.

And another island: Minister for Energy Michael Shanks made a trip to the Isle of Eigg to learn about the success of the community owned energy scheme Eigg Electric. “With Great British Energy we want to harness the potential of communities to deliver local power plans” he said.

Great insights on providing stability to the oil and gas sector while transitioning to clean energy!

"Clarity: government will consult on new guidance, concluding the consultation by spring 2025." As the UK navigates its energy future, addressing regional disparities will be crucial for creating a sustainable, equitable, and prosperous energy system for all. For us inovadores, it would be nice to understand if the current UK government will be addressing the Energy Imbalance. What strategies are planned ? Are the UK government investing in decentralized energy infrastructure and policies ? Or will the UK government continue with the "status quo" of a centralized approach ? What will be the role of the interconnectors with mainland Europe? What's the plan for the?North Sea oil and gas industry ?

Expensive energy isn't protection. We need to learn to innovate to have cheaper and alternative mode of energies to support our people and businesses. Cheaper energy can create a robust climate to compete in international markets. Thanks for posting I would be good to get your thoughts as to why ECO4 funding is at a hiatus as winter approaches with increased energy bills?
