IT Desktop Support - Rename Computer & Give it Your Preferred Name

Did you just buy a new laptop? Or a new desktop for an office employee? Or just a new high configuration gaming PC for your kids. And now you have noticed the computer name is User-PC, Desktop-PC, Probook-PC or may be something else you just simply don’t care about. But what you care is you want to put your preferred name on the system. May be your name or may be your adorable kid's name. Whatever reason and intention it is if you want to change PC name then this article is intended for you.

Well changing a computer name might influence adjacent printer or network connections. So be ensured you are not changing PC name without enough backup. I would tell you how and where you need to be cautious. Now let me show you steps that you need to follow when you are changing the computer name.

I assume you are using windows 7 O/S. If not then you can shoot me an email or ask directly on comment section to know how you can change your default computer name for your specific O/S.

Step 1: Click on start menu and then go to Computer.

Step 2: Right click on Computer and select Properties.

Step 3: Click on Change settings.

Step 4: System properties window will be opened. From System properties window click on Change… button.

Step 5: Inside Computer name you will see the current name. Now you can simply delete the existing name and write down your own preferred name. Before over writing new system name you can take a note of existing PC name. if you face any printer or network error which has happened mainly because the PC name is changed then you can always rewrite the old PC name to address the problem.

Step 6: Click Ok. Then from new popup window click Restart Now and restart your PC.
