Desire > Self Confidence = Breakout Moment

Only when your DESIRE is GREATER than your SELF CONFIDENCE can you achieve a BREAKOUT MOMENT.
When I was in my late teens, I started having episodes of anxiety before and even after workouts better known as panic attacks or at least that`s what the doctor diagnosed. I was a mess for the next 12 months. The hardest part of my condition was the constant anxiety about having another attack. In that short period of time my self confidence was shattered and by ricochet I instinctively learned to master the art of avoidance. Avoiding at all cost situations of possible anxiety. This was not only debilitating but it prevented me from achieving any type of breakout moment.
Then I met a man who changed my outlook. Dr. Beauchesne and his team performed a series of tests and finally after a few months properly diagnosed me with a very mild case of non obstructive HCM which is a genetic heart condition. Under his team's care and proper medication he taught me why some patients under difficult situations become overwhelmed, while others persevere and lead an active normal life. He taught me everything he’d learned, and as I started applying it, my anxiety subsided within a few months. In fact, Luc "sorta" became a life "situational" coach, and over the past 20 years we`ve (our team and I) have managed to put our heart into everything that we do.
Together we`ve (our team and I) had countless breakout moments. Even after four decades on this earth, I still need to remind myself to dream big, trust the gut, silence the demons inside of me and go for it every single day. It's a life long #hustle.
Here are my top 3 tips to overcoming your fear of failure :
1. Aim to reach your goals by acting on instinct
Learn to act based on instinct, and silence out the voice of doubt. That means learning to follow your true GUT FEELING.
As Oprah has said, “Every right decision I have ever made has come from my gut. Every wrong decision I’ve made was the result of me not listening to the greater voice of myself.”
2. Practice your craft (DESIRE) under pressure
While your competition is going through the routine daily motions, you’re practicing and perfecting in difficult game situations. It's only under these high pressure situations that you will learn to master the left-brained rules so your right brain can have limitless freedom to break the rules and act on instinct. When you're brave enough to take more of a action, led approach to new ideas, rather than solely focusing on what you've been doing routinely for the last month, year or even decade, you will ignite your’ love #passion. It's when we start building #curating more compelling ideas that we grow.
Jim Rohn once said, “the way to enjoy life best is to wrap up one goal and start right on the next one. Don’t linger too long at the table of success, the only way to enjoy another meal is to get hungry.”
Simply put, Jim Rohn possess the unique ability to bring extraordinary insights to ordinary principles.
DESIRE under pressure is your greatest asset.
Your DESIRE determines:
- The size of challenges/goals you can undertake
- How likely you will be to achieve those goals
- How well you bounce back from failures
When you have the DESIRE, you simply don’t care how many times you fail, you’re going to succeed. Your mind is in sync with your body and you can zero in on getting SHIT done right Fn NOW!

3. When the pressure is on, step on the throttle
Most people have a tendency to crack under the pressure when the heat is on. We've been there. An overtime playoff game, a final exam that will kick off your career, a make it or break it job interview or that time you agreed to give a speech in front of 100 people... These moments in time are usually always accompanied by the classic anxiety symptoms such as sweaty palms, stomach in knots, increased heartbeat and an overwhelming feeling of "What if... I fail"
- What if I fumble the football on the last play of the game
- What if don't pass this exam
- What if the employer doesn't give a crap of what makes me unique
- What if I draw a blank right before I walk up on stage to begin my speech
In those exact possible "BREAKOUT MOMENTS" instances you must do two things GREAT.
- You must believe in yourself enough to trust your instinct, block out the negatives and go for it
- But most important of all: You must want something bad enough (DESIRE) that nothing will stop you from reaching your goal.
When you’re desire is greater than your self confidence, it only increases the pressure to do more. Immediately following a breakout moment, you’re focused on the next challenge.
### Remember: Pressure is not stress. But the former is converted to the latter when you have a tendency to keep rethinking past or future events, while attaching negative emotion to those thoughts. Of course, leaders must practice reflection. -Harvard Business Review
Desire > Self Confidence = Breakout Moment
While learning to deal with my condition I trained myself to follow these steps. With time and sheer determination it worked. My anxiety levels went down and my breakout moments multiplied. More heartening, I discovered that everything my mentors taught me over the years could be taught to others, with similar results.

“Mental resilience is arguably the most critical trait of a world-class performer, and it should be nurtured continuously. Left to my own devices, I am always looking for ways to become more and more psychologically impregnable. When uncomfortable, my instinct is not to avoid the discomfort but to become at peace with it. My instinct is always to seek out challenges as opposed to avoiding them.” — Josh Waitzkin

7 年Beautifully articulated! I completely agree that mental resilience and the deep desire to achieve something, delivers what we want. This happened on the weekend with my 13-year old daughter's Division 1 rugby team. They made it to the finals and were up against a team who had beaten them in EVERY clash during the season. A few of us parents & coaches said to them 'How BADLY do you want to win this championship? Don't focus on losing. Focus on giving it your ALL'. They did exactly this and clinched the championship Cup!!

7 年Simon, thank you for sharing your experiences and insights and I love the powerful simplicity of your equation! Desire >Self Confidence=Breakthrough Moment is a perfect example of several concepts contained within a personal/leadership training program I deliver called 'Playing Your Bigger Game'. The model focuses on when something we hunger for (DESIRE) is deep enough to enable us to move through our comfort zones that are not serving us in the moment (SELF CONFIDENCE, FEAR, VULNERABILITY, ETC.) we become compelled and activated to take bold action (BREAKTHROUGH MOMENT).
