Designer Dogs: Everything You Need to Know

The idea of owning a purebred dog may sound exciting to dog lovers out there, but there are some things you need to know about designer dog breeds or mix breeds, before adopting.

From Goldendoodles to Cockapoo, there are plenty of doodle breeds to choose from. Below you will learn about some of the best dog mixes and how to care for them once you’ve brought one home. 

What is a Designer Dog?

designer dog is defined as the breeding of two purebred dogs to make a new kind of dog with particular desired traits. There are a lot of pretty dogs who are designer dogs that are a combination of two even prettier dogs. A purebred dog, however, is a breed that has only been bred within their own gene pool to keep their lineage pure. 

Designer dogs are bred for special traits such as size, personality, and other physical qualities such as being hypoallergenic or athletic. There are quite a few popular designer dog breeds out there that are absolutely adored by dog lovers around the world and appreciated for their special qualities. Breeds such as the Aussiedoodle, Chug, Goldendoodle, and the Cockapoo, just to name a few.

Benefits of Owning a Designer Dog

Some of the benefits have already been touched on, there are a great many benefits that come with owning a designer dog. For instance, having a mixed breed dog rather than one that is purebred allows for gene pool variation which usually makes for a dog breed that is less likely to face lots of health issues throughout their lifetime.  

Some specific benefits of designer dogs include being hypoallergenic due to crossing dog breeds who are known for their hypoallergenic qualities. Other designer dogs are created as a more quiet or docile breed for people who would prefer to live a quieter and calmer lifestyle. 

Aussiedoodle

The Aussiedoodle is well known for its intelligence as well as its love for being physically active and fun-loving. Once trained, the Aussiedoodle makes an excellent therapy dog for those in need of that kind of companionship.

Chugs are known for their ease of training but also an occasional stubbornness. 

Cockapoo

This scruffy, medium-sized dog is the result of the breeding of the Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle. Just another one of the many crossbreed results that include the Poodle for their many great qualities. Their weight can max out between 10-30 pounds, and they will maintain a puppy-like personality for long after their younger years. Goldendoodle

Thanks to the varying sizes of the Poodle, the Goldendoodle also comes in three sizes: Miniature, medium, and standard. Giving dog lovers that many more options to choose from when considering adopting a Goldendoodle. 

Bassador

The Basset Hound and the Labrador Retriever mix is a breed that can have a wide range of personality types, due to the varying personalities of the two pure breeds that go into making the Bassador. This designer breed can also be anywhere from lazy and laid back to active and always on the hunt. 

Cavapom

There are many colors to choose from when considering choosing the Cavapom as the dog to adopt for your family. The Cavapom is a beautiful mix breed between King Charles Spaniel and the Pomeranian dog breeds. They are easily trainable and love to play with and interact with children especially. 

Doxiepoo

The Doxiepoo is a cool little dog that has some traits inherited from the Dachshund and Poodle, two great purebreds. Their body frame and personality can range anywhere from long and skinny like a Dachshund or having a fit physique like the Poodle. They may also inherit the Poodle’s easily trainable nature or the stubbornness of the Dachshund.

The idea of designer dogs may sound ethically questionable, but with all the benefits that come from crossbreeding certain breeds, there are benefits for both the dog as well as their forever families. Benefits such as being hypoallergenic and more laid back. The dog also benefits from having a wider gene pool, making the odds of them facing many health problems a lot less than if they were purebred.

The Bernedoodle is known to be one of the healthier Doodle breeds out there. Not to mention full of love and affection for their human family. Mixed breeds of dogs, or doodles, are often healthier than their purebred ancestors, however. The Bernedoodle may have great health, but the Goldendoodle is one of the more popular doodle breeds among the dog-loving communities.

Mixed breeds of dogs are generally healthier and freer of health issues as they grow older, due to the increased genetic diversity. Purebred dogs have a very small gene pool, as breeders try to keep the purebred line going, leading to a gene pool that continues to grow smaller and smaller over time.

This is my precious fur baby, she’s a Golden Doodle, her name is Rosebud ??and she is three years old. Prior to her I had two Golden Retrievers.... they are all wonderful to own. The beauty of the Doodle is no shedding..... definitely a plus!
