Design Your Power CV / Résumé – Step #3 of a Perfect Job Search
In this article, I explain Step #3 "Design your focused and convincing CV / résumé" of the 7-Step Method "Fast Lane to the Perfect Job" I have developed to maximize the success of my coaching clients. If you haven't read my previous article here on LinkedIn in which I give an overview of the whole approach, I recommend reading that first.
Why having a powerful CV / résumé is so decisive
Your CV / résumé functions as the anchor of your individual job applications. The quality of this document is usually the most important factor in the decision to invite you for a job interview or not.
As you are not present in person (yet), your CV / résumé is the only thing that can speak up for you at the early stages. While a good cover letter can also help, it's only your CV / résumé that can sell. If your document fails to do so, that's the sad end of your particular job application.
So, the time spent on creating a persuasive CV / résumé is usually invested very well.
The two most important features for success
There are a lot of details you need to pay attention to if your document is supposed to make a great impression on the reader. However, if you manage to furnish your document with the following two aspects successfully, you will have accomplished the most critical tasks already.
Curate data with the focus on the wanted type of position
The information in your document must be aligned with the focus of your job search. So, do not just reel off your work history in general but present well-selected data that is relevant to the type of position you're going to apply for.
Read my article on step #1 again if you're not yet fully aware of why this is so important.
Present the accomplishments of your previous work
The most important selling point of your work experience to date is the presentation of the positive outcome of your work. In other words, it's about showing the value you created for your previous employers.
So, based on your List of Successes prepared in step #2, always mention all the relevant achievements of your work with the respective tasks, responsibilities, and activities of the previous positions held.
