6 dysfunctional beliefs about career and life and how to overcome them
On-going instead of once-and-for-all
Life Design is not only for students who have to figure out once what they want and then the rest will unfold automatically. It is for everyone at any stage in their lives. It is about designing changes and supporting decision making, whether it is
…shall I stay in my current job or start my own business
…how can I go back to the job market after a break
…how I can I design my retirement
…how can I make my daily commute more enjoyable
plus many more! Life Design is an iterative process.
Differentiating instead of dichotomist thinking
Life Designers do not think in “either or”, they rather aim to understand in a differentiated manner what it is that makes their current situation not so good or what is it that makes “working with dogs” so attractive.
Experiences instead of assumptions
Life Designers replace assumptions with actual experiences. Assuming how a particular job or activity might be is not the best basis for making a decision. Creating mini-experiences on the basis of a differentiated view creates more confidence in decision-making.
Low-risk prototypes instead of heroic changes
Life Designers do not think of heroic changes with high-risk decisions in terms of time, money and emotions, they rather use their differentiated view and the notion of mini-experiences to design low-risk prototypes. Instead of quitting the job and taking all money to create a surf school, they would want to prototype how it is to work in a surf school to find out what it is about the surf school that makes it attractive for them.
Working visually instead of staying in your head
Life Designers do carry their hopes and wishes for the future in their head but also find ways to make them visual to have better conversations with themselves, just like Einstein, Da Vinci or Freud. And they also use those visuals to talk to others about their inside-world and enable them to understand it better and also to contribute to their thoughts by having healthy and meaningful conversations.
Team effort instead of solo-project
Life Designers know that they can get to a certain point by themselves and that they need someone else, one person or a small team to take them even further. Others help you to figure out what it is that makes you love the idea of having a cupcake store, they will ideate other options for you and will also help and encourage you to design prototypes and make them happen.
Make things happen
If you are interested in overcoming these dysfunctional beliefs, feel free to join our workshops. Do not waste more time in your life on things you do not enjoy doing. Make time in your agenda for yourself, take a step back and tap into what makes life meaningful to you, use a small life design team to help you ideate options and create the confidence to make things happen.
Design Your Life goes Human Capital
We will soon run a Round Table event for HR leaders on the value of design thinking and design your life for Human Capital management. Feel free to contact me if you are interested in joining this Round Table. More information is coming soon.
