Design Your Day!
I just finished episode 444 of the Tim Ferris Show where Tim interviews Hugh Jackman. The whole interview was wonderful, but one part of the interview in particular caught my eye.
Hugh talks about his “design of the dayâ€. It reminded me very much of a the visioning ceremony that Thomas Meloche has done with my kids. He basically facilitates them through writing a description about the future of their activity (one was about a band percussion section and the other about leading a group of missionaries). Hugh seems to have taken the idea to a new level! He sends a “daily design†text to his coach every morning that is written in past tense...Today I did this and the outcome was that...and then he grades himself at the end of the day.
It’s amazing how he created a #ceremony that he does consistently, and in the podcast he describes the great benefits he gains from it.
He also shares a tip on the mindset he has about tasks like these. He says they are necessary for him...just like taking a shower. “You’re really busy. What about the kids? But do I say ‘I can’t shower today because I have to make time for the kids?’ No.â€
I really enjoyed hearing things that I already know, but in such a profoundly different way that it helped me re-learn them!
Q: Do you want to build something amazing?
A: Have a vision.
Q: Do you want to get better at something?
A: Practice it daily and be consistent. Think about it in such a way that you simply can’t skip it...it’s just part of life.
A2: Turn that practice into a #ceremony where it is social and ritual, provides feedback, gets work done, and provides positive emotional energy.
If we know what we want, it's much easier to achieve. If we envision what we want, we can see the path to get there. Why not write down what we want every morning, send it to an accountability partner, and then get feedback (even if it is from ourselves) at the end of each day? What a great #ceremony from Hugh Jackman to help us relentlessly improve!
This is just a small portion of the great information in the podcast, I highly recommend investing 102 minutes of time! Please share your thoughts and learnings, or if you have a favorite podcast that deserves a listen...let me know!
