** This post shares my POV, delves into the background of design, explores design thinking and methodologies in the enterprise, highlights the importance of digital transformation through design, and provides some examples from my work as well as successful? case studies from the industry?**
Most of us understand the importance of design in our lives. Beautiful objects and visual art constantly surround us. We’ve spent countless hours in museums, libraries, and art galleries. Yet, how often do we stop thinking about design’s role in our businesses??
Design misconceptions I had and why you may benefit from this post
Many think that design is the domain of only those with a background in art, graphic design, architecture, or other design-related fields. However, design is a critical factor in the success of nearly every business worldwide.
My background as an engineer turned management consultant turned startup executive where my day job is to help clients digitally transform their organizations with data, analytics, cloud, AI/ML and other emerging technologies.?
While doing so, I need to really ensure that we design & develop usable and meaningful experiences for our clients as we re-engineer business? processes, enable people and deploy technologies to solve their burning issues and put them on the path to not only survive but thrive amidst chaos.
One of the primary things that comes to the forefront in application design is User Interface/ User Experience Design and it has a key role to play in Customer Experience Management . If you keep customer at the center of your business (as every executive & entrepreneur should), you have to care for design.
But, how do you define?"Design" and why is it important?
Essence of design is to figure out solutions to being more productive.
Design in business is the most crucial thing because it’s what people see first and shapes their perceptions and expectations.? In fact, design has become such a pivotal element in today's rapidly evolving business landscape that It has transitioned from being solely focused on aesthetics to becoming a strategic tool that shapes the success of enterprises.
The background of design can be traced back to the early days of human civilization when humans began crafting tools and objects to fulfill their needs. Over time, design evolved, intertwining functionality, aesthetics, and usability. Today, design encompasses a wide array of disciplines, including product design, graphic design, user experience (UX) design, and service design.
There is proof in the industry for those who have adopted design, those? companies are having great advantages. In a Gartner study, they found that 89% of companies said? that they would focus on UX to set them apart. So this is about differentiation by design. Another study? found that 70% of projects fail because of poor UX. And that's a huge number. There's also a study by the design management institute (DMI) that says that design- led? companies have significant stock market advantage and that in past 10 years they have outperformed S&P? by 211%.
Now tell me what is Design Thinking?
Design thinking is a human-centered problem-solving approach that encourages empathy, collaboration, and iteration. It involves understanding the needs and desires of users and finding innovative solutions to meet them. By applying design thinking principles, enterprises can gain a deeper understanding of their customers and create products and services that truly resonate with their target audience.
Various design methodologies have emerged in the enterprise context to streamline the design process and foster innovation. Agile design methodologies, such as Scrum and Kanban, enable teams to break down complex projects into smaller, manageable tasks. This iterative approach facilitates faster feedback cycles, continuous improvement, and the ability to respond swiftly to changing market demands.
I cut my teeth in Design Thinking at IBM after being exposed to the early work in this space by IDEO, Hasso Plattner Institute and Stanford's d.school several years ago. We had a specific way to introduce Design Thinking to our clients’ businesses through the IBM Garage Method.? IBM Garage value orchestration methodology has been deployed across multiple industries and Fortune 500 clients to guide product UX strategy and experience transformation and improve outcomes.

Digital Transformation through Design
The importance of digital transformation through design cannot be overstated. In the digital age, where technology is reshaping industries at an unprecedented pace, enterprises must adapt and evolve to remain competitive. Digital transformation involves leveraging technology to fundamentally change the way businesses operate, and design plays a vital role in this process.
Claiming to be customer-centric is easy, but the pandemic quickly laid bare the customer experience (CX) weaknesses of many companies. Some stumbled as they rushed to pivot to virtual engagement and digital commerce.Transformations that had been on companies’ to-do lists forever were urgently elevated to imperatives. Its no wonder, then, that in IBM’s 2021 CEO study, 60% of CEOs who lead the most financially successful organizations cite “delivering better customer experiences” among their highest priorities in the next 2 to 3 years.
Digital transformation through design focuses on creating seamless and delightful user experiences across digital touchpoints. By adopting a user-centric approach, businesses can design intuitive interfaces, optimize customer journeys, and enhance overall user satisfaction. This, in turn, leads to increased customer loyalty, higher conversion rates, and improved brand perception.
Transformation through Design: Exemplary Case Studies
Several case studies exemplify the transformative power of design in digital transformation. One such example is Airbnb, which evolved from "couch surfing" to disrupting the hospitality industry by offering a platform that connects travelers with unique accommodations. By focusing on user experience and employing a visually appealing interface, Airbnb revolutionized the way people travel and disrupted the traditional hotel industry.
Another notable case is the transformation of the healthcare industry through digital design. Companies like Zocdoc and 23andMe have leveraged design principles to simplify complex healthcare processes and empower patients. Zocdoc's user-friendly platform enables patients to find and book appointments with doctors easily, while 23andMe's intuitive interface allows individuals to explore their genetic information effortlessly.
Purely out of curiosity and mainly to keep up with the trends, especially how latest developments in technology, especially Generative AI will impact the future of a successful Design unicorn, I attended Figma’s design conference in San Francisco recently. Figma has a market share of 34.96% in the collaborative-design-and-prototyping market and its strong financials (~90% profit margins) combined with the? impending acquisition by Adobe at $20B valuation and a stellar lineup of speakers and topics intrigued me. I learnt a few things at Config2023 and shared with my Linkedin? family (eg How did CEO Brian Chesky save Airbnb from a near death experience) here and posted here as well as? tweeted here and here .
What’s Next?
Looking to the future, design is poised to play an even more significant role in shaping enterprises. As emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and augmented reality continue to mature, design will be crucial in crafting immersive and engaging experiences. The integration of design and data will unlock new possibilities, allowing businesses to leverage insights to drive innovation and personalized customer experiences.
In conclusion, design has evolved from its humble origins to become a critical factor in the success of enterprises. Design thinking and methodologies enable businesses to create innovative solutions that cater to their customers' needs. Digital transformation through design empowers businesses to enhance user experiences, differentiate themselves in the market, and thrive in the digital age. As we move forward, the future of design holds immense promise, where technology and human-centric design converge to unlock unprecedented opportunities for businesses and society as a whole.
When you lead with design, you end with great results.
?I’m excited about Design as the X-Factor in Digital Transformation. What about you?

1 年This is a thoughtful piece, Piyush, and thanks for posting it. The reason for the failure rate of new products at 70% is perhaps because they are designed by engineers and not by designers.
