Design, Virtual Reality, and the Portland Building
Using VR as a holistic tool, the city of Portland envisions the renovation of the iconic city building originally designed by Michael Graves in 1982. As the architect on a $195 million restoration of Michael Graves' iconic postmodern Portland Building in Portland, Oregon, DLR Group’s project will provide more natural light to city employees and solve water leaks, structural issues, and mechanical deficiencies.
“Stepping into virtual reality and putting on the goggles was a completely different experience,” said Lead Project Manager Kristin Wells with the City of Portland. “Many of our stakeholders are not people who live in the design world, and it’s hard to imagine a three-dimensional space based on two-dimensional drawings. This put us in a place to really be able to understand it better.”
