In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it's easy for our minds to get caught up in the mundane. We often find ourselves focusing solely on what needs to be done, rather than exploring the vast possibilities of what could be done. Our brains become set on auto pilot and we neglect to stop, engage with the world around us and the limitless possibilities of the not yet manifested tomorrow. In the 21st century, with all the awesome technology at our fingertips, we need to be able to think divergently and converge our thinking in order to make the most of it. We need to be able to WONDER.
This is where design thinking comes in. Design thinking is all about exploring and experimenting with different ideas and solutions, in order to come up with the best possible outcome. It's about thinking outside the box, and not being afraid to take risks and try new things. And in a world that's constantly evolving, it's more important than ever to have these skills.
The power of design thinking is especially evident when it comes to sustainability and the UN's sustainable development goals. With the world facing urgent issues such as climate change and resource depletion, we need to be able to think creatively in order to find solutions that will help us to create a more sustainable future.
One area where this is particularly important is in the creation of "green" jobs. As we move towards a low-emission economy, we will need millions of people with the skills to help us get there. And the good news is that companies are willing to hire based on skills alone, which means that if you have the right skill set, you'll be in demand.
Of course, it's not just about having the right skills. It's also about having the right mindset. As mentioned earlier, design thinking is all about being open to new ideas and approaches. It's about being willing to take risks and experiment with different solutions. And it's about being able to work collaboratively with others to achieve a common goal.
So how can you develop your design thinking skills? Well, there are a few key areas to focus on. First and foremost, you need to be able to think divergently. This means being able to explore a wide range of ideas and solutions, without necessarily judging them too quickly. It's about being open to different possibilities, and not being afraid to take risks.

Secondly, you need to be able to converge your thinking. This means taking all the ideas and solutions you've come up with, and narrowing them down to the ones that are most likely to succeed. It's about being able to make tough decisions, and prioritizing what's most important.
Thirdly, you need to be able to think creatively. This means being able to come up with ideas that are truly innovative, and that have the potential to change the world. It's about not being afraid to challenge the status quo, and to think outside the box.
Finally, you need to be able to work collaboratively with others. This means being able to communicate effectively, and to build strong relationships with your colleagues. It's about being able to listen to other people's ideas, and to be willing to compromise when necessary.
In conclusion, design thinking is an essential skill for the 21st century. It's all about being able to think divergently and converge your thinking in order to find the best possible solutions. And in a world that's facing urgent sustainability issues, it's more important than ever to be able to think creatively and work collaboratively with others. So embrace your inner designer, and let your curiosity and wonder guide you towards a brighter future.
