Design Thinking with Students

During the last two weeks of August, I facilitated Design Thinking workshops for students at 2 different events.

1. India DSC Summit 2019

Google India hosted the India DSC Summit 2019 for the Developer Student Club leads (DSC Leads) from 180+ institutions across India.

The focus of the DSC Program is to enable students with technology; and these students use technology to solve problems in their local community. To ensure that students are able to identify the problems in their community, they were introduced to Design Thinking during the summit by the means of a workshop over two days.

Representatives from 7 NGO's - Akanksha Foundation, Global Shapers Community, Goonj, Hope Foundation, Protsahan India Foundation, Smile Foundation & Waste Warriors were invited to share their journeys. As part of the workshop, DSC Leads interviewed these representatives, derived at the problem statements and came up with solutions in a span of 4 hours. Later the NGO representatives informed us that the problem statements students derived & also their solution ideas were very accurate. Many of these NGO's are continuing to work with the DSC leads to prototype and develop the solutions.

2. DesertHack by CEL (Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership), BITS Pilani.

Design Thinking workshop was conducted as a prelude to their event #DesertHack, a 56 hour hackathon for on campus students. The theme of the hackathon was "Build for India". The participants were allowed to work on their own ideas. For those who did not have ideas, the organizers provided the problem statements from Micro Finance, Education, Assisstive Technology, Waste Management & Forest Fires.

The workshop was conducted after class hours i.e. from 6pm - 10pm and more than 50 students were part of the workshop. Shout-out to all the students who enthusiastically participated in the workshop. Students participated in the Empathize, Define & Ideate phases of Design Thinking. Many of the students formed their teams for the weekend during the workshop. They came up with some great problem statements related to waste management problem on campus and also education system in the country.
