Design Thinking + Lean Startup + Agile

Design Thinking + Lean Startup + Agile

Enterprise Architects and technology innovation leaders must use a combination of iterative, experimental methodologies to support digital innovation efforts.

Gartner released a visual diagram that combines design thinking, lean startup, and agile to drive digital innovation.

The Design Thinking Lean Startup Agile combines three flexible models to demonstrate a reduced risk of failing. All three methodologies use feedback loop to ensure the requirements of end user are understood correctly. It further enables developers to improve product/service features based on a continuous feedback loop. Each methodology includes a list of stages leading customers from problem to its solution. These include:

Design Thinking: Emphasize – Define – Ideate

Major Techniques used in the process

Double Diamond Technique

Lean Startup: Measure – (multiple iterations) – Build – Lean

  • Eliminating waste
  • Build quality in
  • Create knowledge
  • Defer commitment
  • Deliver fast

Agile: Sprint review – shippable increment – sprint execution – sprint planning – product backlog

Few of the industry wide used Agile Methodologies can be summed up as below. Each of these offer its own set of pros and cons. Ensure the suitability to your needs before choosing anyone of them. If you are working on short term project with a single team, Kanban could be a good option. For high dependency multi team environments, Feature Driven Development (FDD) would be a better option.

  • SCRUM
  • Kanban
  • Extreme Programming (XP)
  • Feature-driven development (FDD)
  • Dynamic Systems Development Method (DSDM)
  • ?Crystal

?Why should you care?

Paramount reason for any failure, starting from start-ups to unicorns and successful service delivery are missed client needs. Most of the teams focus on solving issues using separate entities.

Let's analyse a hypothetical situation ( to be honest, its story of all teams :) )

Scrum teams mostly focus on delivering what's inside a user story. All user stories completed with excellent team velocity. No items making way back to backlog, team is overjoyed. Then comes the D -Day and Demo turns out to be disaster

Many a times the focus is on the solution instead of reaching to the core of the problem. That is where this model proves an excellent enabler to get things done the right way, with right tools and time tested processes.

Analyse your problem, develop alternatives, finalize a solution, prototype and start implementation.

Conclusively, do not follow what others are doing, just because it works for them does not make it suitable to your problem statement.?

I recently began learning about Lean Startup and find this article very helpful. It dovetails nicely with the 4-level method I use for communication and understanding in building consensus among diverse stakeholders. According to that methodology, I would sequence the 6 Thinking Hats into the following levels: 1) Facts 2) Feelings 3) Benefits <> Cautions 4) Process <> Creativity
