Design Thinking (DT) Activation hour to improve Focus in Learning

Hey Connections,

Am happy to share about Day 1 DT Activation hour for freshers(2024 - 2025) on 22nd October 2024.

Every day is a challenging one for all. The challenges may be in terms of morning traffic, Late tension, negativity, inferior, crowded bus and much more. These challenges apply to the student’s community too!!. Assume a day of a class starting with mathematics or any analytical courses with these challenges!! It will not be focused on the learner. Also, Positivism and good thoughts are required every day for individuals to stay focused and motivated more in the learning process.

To overcome these challenges, we introduced the Design Thinking (DT) Activation hour every day before we started the class. DT Activation hour includes Meditation/Yoga for a duration of 10 Mins and sharing of positive thoughts from Gita/Bible/Quran for 5-10 Minutes. Mentors of the class will facilitate these by involving students on a rotational basis for these activities.

Mentors do not require a master's degree in meditation/yoga. Making students learn and engaging them here will be sound. But assigning students before these activities is really important for the effectiveness of the hour.

We make students' minds focus, stress relief, positivism and also socially skilled by making the students speak. At the end of their program, students will become emotionally strong. These activities improve the performance and focus of the students in their learning process to attain more.

Here are the steps to implement DT Activation hour everyday. A total of 15 minutes is allocated for the DT Activation hour, which I divide into 5 minutes for Meditation/Yoga and 10 minutes for students to share moral stories."

Part I - Five Minutes of Meditation/Yoga

1.I introduced my students to the benefits of meditation.

2. I instructed my students to sit straight with their hands on their laps.

3. By playing the meditation music, I asked my students to close their eyes and listen to the music.

4. The students began listening to the music and stayed focused.

5.?During this time, I observed the students and signaled the naughtier ones to close their eyes.

6.?Even when latecomers arrived, I didn't scold anyone, but instead, silently invited them to be inside the classroom to listen to the meditation.

7.?Initially, the meditation lasted for three minutes, but later, I increased it to 5 minutes.

8.?My students became proficient in meditation through regular practice.

9.?It is essential to arrange a speaker in advance, which can be done by the faculty or students.

10. The meditation sessions have been successful, and I vary the method of meditation every two weeks.

Part II - 10 Minutes for Sharing Moral/Value Based Stories from the Holy Books / Need of the hour:

1.?I emphasized the importance of sharing moral/value-based stories in the class to my students.

2.?Three students per day were assigned to share stories based on the Nominal roll and informed beforehand.

3.?On the following day, the assigned student stood on the dias and delivered their prepared moral/value story.

4.?The first student struggled and hesitated due to stage fear.

5.?Instead of scolding, I provided motivation and support.

6.?I requested all the students to listen attentively and support their classmates during the storytelling session.

7.?The applause and motivation before sharing the story boosted the student's confidence and made them eager to share.

8.?With the help of the class students, we created a lively and engaging storytelling session.

9.?The other two students shared their stories confidently without requiring much motivation.

10.?My role during this session was to motivate and encourage all students to participate actively. I attribute the successful implementation to effective communication and motivation.
