During the ‘Design Systems Sandbox’ talk, hosted by Bliss and led by our Lead Product Designer, Ruben Ferreira Duarte , we explored the integration and impact of design systems. The event featured a distinguished roundtable comprising three C-level guests: Diana Mendes , Head of Design & Digital Experience at the Grupo Ageas Portugal ; Fátima Ferreira , IT Strategy and UX/UI Manager at MC ; and Isabel Novais Machado , Head of Design at Cofidis Portugal . Together, they shared invaluable insights within their organizations.

Making better products faster

The benefits of design systems are endless. Fátima Ferreira enlightened the acceleration of design and development cycles that these systems brought to her teams at Sonae MC: “Now, they have more time to dedicate themselves to usability tests, product discoveries, challenging product owners to make changes to products, and design thinking workshops.”

Guaranteeing accessibility

Creating an accessible design system helps designers create inclusive, easy-to-use interfaces. When asked about the role of accessibility within Cofidis Portugal , Isabel Novais Machado noted: “We are currently analyzing what will be defined to ensure that when we have our design system, it is more robust and complete, functioning as a certifier of the accessibility of our interfaces.”

Diana Mendes from Ageas, acknowledged the challenges organizations face in achieving accessibility: “There are many levels of accessibility, and sometimes companies have difficulty achieving them all. Meeting all accessibility criteria implies many changes and huge costs for companies, not just to make the websites accessible but the entire customer experience.”
