As a child visiting my aunt for the first time in her grand five-story apartment, which had striking paint colors and a stunning exterior, no one warned me that I'd struggle to find my way out of the building.

The exterior was elegant and visually appealing, but once inside, the complex interior design, full of winding staircases, left me feeling disoriented. I set out with the intent to explore, but soon found myself lost in a maze of stairs, unable to recall the way back to my aunt’s apartment.

Without any signs to guide me, I kept ending up in the same spot no matter which staircase I took. Thankfully, a kind neighbor eventually helped me, though even he seemed to struggle with the layout. It was a nerve-wracking experience, and I didn’t return to visit my aunt until after she moved out of that building.

This experience mirrors how users often feel when navigating poorly designed websites or apps. You find yourself stuck, unsure of how to achieve your goal, with no guidance to help answer questions like:

- “Where am I?”

- “Where can I go?”

- “What will I find when I get there?”

- “What’s nearby?”

- “How do I get out?”

Apple has always prioritized answering these questions for users through thoughtful design. In this article, we’ll explore the key UX design principles that Apple has mastered—principles that every designer should know.
