Design Principles for a New AI World: Rethinking the "10 Commandments of Good Design"

By Ovetta Sampson, Vice-President of Machine Learning Experience Design at Capital One

In a rapidly evolving world where artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes how we live and work, the role of design is undergoing a profound transformation. Design is no longer just about aesthetics and functionality—it's about shaping a future that's equitable, sustainable, and inclusive. As designers, we're tasked with rethinking traditional principles to address the unique challenges and opportunities presented by AI.

A New Framework for Good Design

The traditional "10 Commandments of Good Design," popularized by Dieter Rams, have served as guiding principles for designers for decades. However, in the age of AI, these principles require a significant overhaul to remain relevant. Below, I propose a reimagined set of principles tailored for the AI era, drawing inspiration from Rams’ original ideas and redefining them to better suit our changing world.

  1. Good Design Solves Hard Problems
  2. Good Design Promotes Healthy Relationships
  3. Good Design Requires Malleability
  4. Good Design Makes Companies Understand and Products Serve
  5. Good Design Acknowledges Bias
  6. Good Design Prevents Dishonesty
  7. Good Design Expects Unintended Consequences
  8. Good Design Fosters Equity
  9. Good Design Considers its Effect on a Collective, Connected Eco-system
  10. Good Design Purposefully Brings Order to Chaos

Embracing a Broader Role

These revised commandments reflect a broader, more responsible perspective on design. As we venture deeper into the AI era, designers must embrace their role as advocates for users and stewards of the future. This involves not only refining products and interfaces but also shaping the ethical and social landscape in which AI operates.

Conclusion

As we stand on the brink of a new era in technology and design, we must reconsider our design philosophies to better align with the realities of a world influenced by AI. By embracing these new principles, designers can help ensure that technology serves humanity in meaningful and sustainable ways, paving the way for a future that benefits all.
