A monolithic program is divided into smaller, loosely linked services using microservices architecture, allowing them to be independently created, deployed, and scaled. Developers utilise a variety of design patterns to keep things flexible and manage complexity. Let's examine a few of the most widely utilised patterns.


API Gateway Pattern

Clients in a microservices architecture frequently have to communicate with many services. Direct client exposure to all of these services may lead to complexity and security issues. This is addressed by the API Gateway design, which offers a single point of entry for client queries.

Why use an API Gateway Pattern?

In microservices architecture, multiple services work together to fulfill different functions. Exposing all these services directly to clients has several downsides:

  • Complexity: Clients need to handle multiple endpoints and make multiple calls to interact with different services.
  • Security Risks: Directly exposing services can make them more vulnerable to unauthorized access.
  • Inconsistent Interfaces: Different services may use different protocols (e.g., REST, gRPC), causing issues for clients.

An API Gateway addresses these challenges by centralizing access to services, offering a unified interface that abstracts the complexity.

Key Responsibilities of an API Gateway

Request Routing:

  • The gateway receives client requests and routes them to the appropriate microservices based on the URL, HTTP method, or other criteria.
  • It can combine responses from multiple services into a single, unified response for the client.

Authentication and Authorization:

  • The gateway can handle user authentication and authorization, ensuring that only authenticated and authorized users can access specific services.
  • It can implement security measures such as OAuth, JWT, or API keys, reducing the need for each microservice to handle security independently.

Load Balancing:

  • It can balance traffic between instances of microservices, distributing requests evenly to manage load and improve performance.
  • The API Gateway can also implement health checks and direct traffic away from unhealthy service instances.

Protocol Translation:

  • An API Gateway can translate protocols, enabling microservices to communicate using different protocols (e.g., converting RESTful HTTP requests to gRPC or WebSocket).
  • This flexibility helps microservices evolve without requiring clients to adapt.

Response Aggregation:

  • For some client requests, the gateway may need to call multiple microservices and aggregate their responses into one.
  • This minimizes the number of client-server interactions, improving efficiency and reducing latency.

Logging and Monitoring:

  • By acting as the entry point for all client interactions, the API Gateway is an ideal place to implement logging, monitoring, and metrics collection.
  • This central point allows for better visibility into the system’s health, performance, and security.

Benefits of the API Gateway Pattern

  • Simplified Client Access: The client only needs to know about the API Gateway, not the underlying services. It reduces the complexity of client-side code and decouples clients from microservices.
  • Enhanced Security: By centralizing security features like authentication and rate limiting, the API Gateway protects microservices from direct exposure and potential attacks.
  • Flexibility and Scalability: It enables microservices to evolve independently and scale without impacting clients, as the gateway abstracts changes.

Challenges of Using an API Gateway

  • Single Point of Failure: If the API Gateway fails, it can disrupt access to all services. It’s important to implement redundancy and failover mechanisms. This is one of the biggest challenge in implementation of API Gateway pattern.
  • Increased Complexity: The gateway itself can become complex as it manages multiple responsibilities, so careful design and implementation are necessary.
  • Performance Overhead: Since all requests pass through the gateway, it can introduce latency, especially if it performs heavy processing like authentication or response aggregation.


Service Registry and Discovery

Microservices frequently have dynamic scalability, generating and destroying services in response to load. Services can dynamically find other services by registering themselves using the Service Registry pattern.

What is Service Registry and Discovery?

Services in microservices frequently have to communicate with one another in order to complete client requests. Microservices operate across several servers, containers, or nodes, in contrast to monolithic systems, where every component runs in a single process and is able to communicate directly with one another. Because of this spread, services must be able to find and interact with one another in real-time.

Microservices register themselves when they start up and deregister when they stop operating in a Service Registry, which is a centralised database. It serves as a list of all the services that are offered together with their instances (IP addresses and ports). Microservices can use the registry to find and connect to other services thanks to a method called service discovery.

How Service Registry and Discovery Work

Service Registration:

  • When a microservice starts, it registers its details (name, IP address, port, health status, etc.) with the service registry.
  • The registry updates this information periodically or when the service’s state changes (e.g., scaling up or down).

Service Discovery:

  • When a service wants to call another service, it queries the service registry to find the current location and status of the target service.
  • The discovery client in the requesting service uses this information to connect to the appropriate service instance.

There are two types of service discovery:

  • Client-Side Discovery: The client (service making the request) queries the service registry directly to find the target service’s address. Examples include Netflix Eureka and Consul.
  • Server-Side Discovery: A load balancer or API gateway handles the discovery process on behalf of the client, querying the service registry and routing the request accordingly. Examples include AWS Elastic Load Balancer (ELB) or Kubernetes’ kube-proxy.

Components of Service Registry and Discovery:

Service Registry

  • The central directory where all microservices register their locations and health status.
  • Examples include Eureka, Consul, and Apache Zookeeper.
  • It must be highly available and fault-tolerant to prevent service discovery failures.

Discovery Client

  • A component within each microservice that communicates with the service registry.
  • It registers the service upon startup and periodically updates the registry about its health and availability.
  • It also queries the registry to discover other services when needed.

Health Checks:

  • Regular health checks are performed by the discovery client or the service registry itself to verify whether a service is still functioning properly.
  • If a service instance becomes unhealthy, the registry removes it from the list of available services, ensuring that other services don’t attempt to connect to it.

Benefits of Service Registry and Discovery

Dynamic Scalability:

  • As services scale up or down, the registry updates their information, allowing other services to discover and interact with new or removed instances dynamically.
  • This is essential in environments like Kubernetes or cloud-based infrastructures where instances are frequently added or removed.

Flexibility

  • Services can be deployed on any host or port, and their locations don’t need to be hardcoded, reducing configuration complexity and making deployments more flexible.
  • This supports containerized environments where services are often deployed with random ports.

Fault Tolerance

  • If a service instance fails or goes offline, the registry stops listing it as available, preventing other services from attempting to connect to a non-responsive instance.
  • The registry itself must be highly available to avoid becoming a single point of failure.

Challenges with Service Registry and Discovery

Service Registry Availability:

  • The registry must be reliable and fault-tolerant. If it fails, service discovery across the entire architecture could be disrupted.
  • Solutions typically involve running multiple instances of the registry in a cluster configuration for high availability.

Consistency and Latency:

  • Updates to the registry (such as health status changes) must be propagated quickly to ensure consistency. However, network delays can cause temporary inconsistencies or delays in service discovery.
  • The architecture must balance the frequency of health checks and updates to optimize consistency and minimize overhead.

Complexity:

  • Implementing client-side discovery requires integrating a discovery client into each microservice, which increases development complexity.
  • Server-side discovery introduces complexity on the infrastructure side, as it involves configuring load balancers or API gateways to handle discovery.


Database per service pattern

Every service in a microservices architecture is in charge of a certain domain or business function. Every microservice must have a private database of its own to house its data, according to the Database Per Service paradigm. This database cannot be accessed directly by any other service, guaranteeing service independence and isolation.

Why Use the Database Per Service Pattern?

Loose Coupling:

  • Microservices are meant to be independently deployable and scalable. Sharing a database between services creates tight coupling, making it difficult to change one service without impacting others.
  • By isolating the databases, services can evolve independently without requiring coordination with other teams or services.

Autonomy:

  • Each microservice has complete control over its data model and database technology (e.g., SQL, NoSQL). This flexibility allows teams to choose the most appropriate technology for their service's requirements and optimize for their specific use case.
  • Services can independently update their schema, index data, or migrate to different databases without affecting other services.

Scalability:

  • Services can scale independently when their databases are separated. For example, if the Order Service experiences high traffic, it can scale its instances and database independently without affecting the User or Product services.
  • This enables optimized resource allocation and cost savings, as only the necessary parts of the system are scaled.

Improved Fault Isolation:

  • If one service or its database fails, the issue is contained within that service. Other services remain unaffected, improving the overall resilience of the architecture.
  • Each service can implement its own backup and recovery strategies, tailored to its needs and criticality.

Benefits of the Database Per Service Pattern

  • Data Ownership: Microservices own their data, making them responsible for managing data consistency, integrity, and security within their own context.
  • Flexibility in Database Technology: Different microservices can use different types of databases (e.g., relational, document, key-value, graph) based on their specific requirements, without being restricted to a one-size-fits-all solution.
  • Independent Scaling and Deployment: Since each microservice manages its own data, they can scale or be updated independently. This supports continuous deployment and allows for frequent releases without service dependencies.

Challenges with the Database Per Service Pattern

Data Consistency:

  • In a monolithic application, a single database can enforce strong consistency using ACID transactions across different modules. In microservices, this becomes challenging since data is distributed across multiple databases.
  • To handle consistency, services often use techniques like Event-Driven Architecture (where services communicate through events) or the Saga Pattern (for managing distributed transactions).

Complex Data Queries and Aggregation:

  • Cross-service queries become difficult because services own their data. Complex reports or queries that involve data from multiple services require services to collaborate.
  • Solutions include using APIs to retrieve and aggregate data across services or using CQRS (Command Query Responsibility Segregation) where read models are built specifically for reporting purposes.

Data Duplication:

  • To maintain independence, microservices may duplicate data that other services need. For example, the Order Service might keep a copy of customer information from the User Service.
  • This duplication helps maintain service autonomy but requires strategies for keeping duplicated data synchronized, often using event-based mechanisms (like messaging or event streaming systems).

Database Management Overhead:

  • With each microservice managing its own database, the operational overhead increases, as each database needs to be set up, monitored, backed up, and maintained independently.
  • Automation tools (like Kubernetes operators) and cloud-native solutions (like managed databases) can help mitigate these challenges by automating deployments and management tasks.

Common Solutions for Managing Data Consistency Across Services

Event-Driven Communication:

  • Services publish events whenever there’s a significant change in state (e.g., a new order is created). Other services listen to these events and react accordingly (e.g., updating inventory when an order is placed).
  • Event-driven communication ensures eventual consistency and helps keep data synchronized across services without direct database access.

Saga Pattern:

  • The Saga pattern is used for managing distributed transactions across microservices. It breaks down a transaction into smaller steps, each handled by a different service. Each step has a compensating action in case something goes wrong, allowing for a rollback-like behavior.
  • Sagas can be orchestrated (with a central coordinator) or choreographed (where each service reacts based on the event triggered by the previous step).

API Composition:

  • For querying data across multiple services, an API composition approach is used. A specific service (e.g., an API Gateway or a backend service) gathers information from multiple microservices through their APIs and combines the data before returning it to the client.
  • This approach enables cross-service queries without violating the database-per-service rule.

Command Query Responsibility Segregation (CQRS):

  • In CQRS, the system separates the responsibility of writing data (commands) and reading data (queries). A microservice handles commands (modifications) independently, while a separate read model aggregates data from multiple sources for querying purposes.
  • This approach helps with read-heavy operations and allows services to maintain autonomy.


Saga pattern

A Saga is a series of local transactions that are overseen by distinct microservices. The pattern ensures that the system stays in a consistent state by using compensatory actions to reverse the work done by the previous transactions in the event that one of these transactions fails. Although the entire process is not atomic, coordination and compensation allow it to become consistent.

How the Saga Pattern Works

  • A saga consists of multiple steps (transactions) distributed across different services.
  • Each step (transaction) in the saga is completed independently by a microservice.
  • If a step fails, compensating actions are triggered for the previous successful steps to roll back or adjust the system.
  • The saga ends when all steps are completed successfully or all compensating actions are performed in case of failure.

There are two primary ways to implement the Saga pattern:

  1. Choreography - is suitable for simple workflows or when services are highly decoupled. It allows for flexibility and scalability but may become complex in larger systems due to the distributed flow and compensation logic.
  2. Orchestration - is better for complex workflows where you need a clear, manageable, and observable process flow. It centralizes control, making it easier to track and debug, but it introduces tighter coupling and potential single points of failure.

Benefits of the Saga Pattern

  • Distributed Transaction Management: It enables coordination of multiple microservices to complete a single business process without the need for a single transaction manager.
  • Resilience and Fault Tolerance: If a step fails, the pattern provides a mechanism for services to undo changes through compensating actions.
  • Flexibility and Scalability: Microservices can work independently, allowing for independent scaling, development, and deployment.


Backend for Frontend (BFF)

The Backend for Frontend (BFF) pattern is a design pattern in microservices architecture that provides a dedicated backend for each type of client (e.g., web, mobile, IoT). The BFF acts as an intermediary between the client applications and the underlying microservices, tailoring the backend response to meet the specific needs of each client. This pattern is particularly useful for optimizing performance, reducing complexity, and ensuring a seamless user experience across multiple types of clients.

Why Use the BFF Pattern?

Client-Specific Needs:

  • Different clients (like mobile apps, web browsers, smartwatches, or IoT devices) often have varying requirements, including data format, response size, and interaction patterns.
  • A single generic API for all clients may lead to performance issues, as clients receive unnecessary data or perform multiple calls to retrieve the needed information.

Decoupling Clients from Microservices:

  • Directly exposing microservices to clients can tightly couple them, making changes in microservices impact all client types.
  • A BFF abstracts the complexity of microservices, ensuring that clients remain independent and unaffected by changes in the backend.

Optimized Performance and Response:

  1. The BFF can aggregate responses from multiple microservices and format the data as needed for each client, reducing the number of network calls and optimizing performance.
  2. It can also handle protocol translation (e.g., converting gRPC to REST) and simplify interactions with the backend.

How the BFF Pattern Works

In the BFF pattern, each client type (e.g., web, mobile, desktop) has its own dedicated backend service—the BFF. The BFF interacts with various microservices, aggregates data, and formats responses specifically tailored for that client. It may perform tasks such as:

  • Request Aggregation: Combining data from multiple microservices into a single response to minimize the number of client calls.
  • Response Shaping: Formatting data (e.g., filtering out unnecessary information) to suit the specific client requirements, reducing the payload size for mobile apps, for instance.
  • Protocol Translation: Converting one protocol to another (e.g., transforming a gRPC or SOAP response into a REST response that the client can handle).
  • Authorization and Security: Managing authentication, authorization, and security policies centrally for each client type.

Conclusion

Design patterns are crucial for creating a successful microservices architecture. They provide solutions to common challenges, such as scaling, service communication, and fault tolerance. Using patterns like API Gateway, Circuit Breaker, and Event Sourcing ensures that microservices remain efficient, scalable, and resilient, even as they grow in complexity.
