Design is more than mere aesthetics, its a dialogue- a constant negotiation between intent and execution

It’s been 7 years, I still try to understand whether I’m more of an Artist or a Designer, maybe this will be a very long journey.

I’m convinced that design permeates every facet of existence; it’s a fundamental essence, a survival instinct. From the simplest cell to the complexity of a cyclone, design is identity – a bridge that links passion with patience.

Differentiating myself from others feels like a futile exercise in self-indulgence. Yet, I recognize that while conventional artists create for mere expression, true artists design. Design embodies the heartbeat of creation. This distinction often transcends literal explanation, existing instead within the realm of aesthetic language.

Typically, conversations about design focus on mediums or products. For me, design resides in my head, hands and beyond, where I possess an intrinsic eye for design, shaped by intent. As a former architect, I occupy a crucial midpoint connecting art and pragmatic economics. I grasp the essence of our motivations as creators: to forge viable products. The word “viable” is pivotal – it’s the key to unlocking a world where design transforms concepts into tangible solutions.

Finding the balance between art and business is a challenging pursuit, yet design serves as that essential bridge. It’s the attention to detail and the decision-making at a granular level that distinguishes a mundane product from a beloved one, and I understand this distinction deeply.

If philosophy fails to align with objectivity, it becomes mere blank verse. One of my initiatives as the head of the design team at HQ was to establish an open-ended conference series called HERO HANDS. Every Wednesday at 4:20 PM, we gathered to explore the Whys. Why this choice? Why not that? These discussions opened pathways to personal perceptions of design, embedding us further in the tapestry of art. In those hours, we delved into the W’s of Art and the Craft, equipping ourselves for the remaining hours of the week. This initiative provided a liberating contrast to the otherwise linear structure we operated within. I firmly believe we must harness this freedom as designers.

My connection to design runs such, that the lines between consumer and product designer often blur. With every product, I instinctively scrutinize the how’s and why’s of its design in relation to its utility – before, during, and after my interaction with it. This ongoing journey leads me to learn, critique, or both. I am perpetually observant, a tendency that teeters on the edge of occupational hazard and blessing, and perhaps it’s best that I remain uncertain.

I hold a steadfast belief that great design possesses the power to change the world, and change is the lifeblood of our existence. I see myself as a catalyst in this transformative process. Art can be elusive, appearing unexpectedly; the next groundbreaking idea may be just beyond the horizon. The key is to remain present and persistent. My keen vision for nuance has only sharpened over the past 5 years of leading a talented design & product team. Yet, I acknowledge there’s still a vast expanse ahead.

As we navigate this intricate landscape, I remain committed to fostering an environment where curiosity and creativity intertwine. Each product is an opportunity for exploration, where the interplay of form and function reveals deeper truths. I strive to cultivate a space where ideas can flourish, allowing the unexpected to emerge from the familiar.

Design is more than mere aesthetics; it’s a dialogue – a constant negotiation between intent and execution. My journey as a designer continues to evolve, and I am excited to see where this path will lead. The quest for design excellence is endless, and every step I take fuels my passion for creating meaningful experiences. With miles to go, I embrace the challenges ahead, ready to explore the boundless possibilities that reside within the realm of design.

Every project I undertake serves as a testament to this philosophy. I approach each with an open mind, recognizing that innovation often emerges from unexpected connections. By fostering a culture of experimentation within my team, I encourage bold ideas that challenge conventional wisdom. It’s in this fertile ground of creativity that true breakthroughs occur, allowing us to redefine boundaries and reshape perceptions.

The dialogue we cultivate in HERO HANDS not only nurtures our understanding but also reinforces the importance of collaboration. Each voice contributes a unique perspective, enriching our collective vision. This communal exploration becomes a source of strength, driving us to refine our ideas and push the envelope further.

In this ongoing journey, I am continually reminded that design is not a solitary pursuit. It thrives on the interplay of diverse influences and collaborative efforts. Each interaction, whether with a colleague, a user, or the world around us, shapes my understanding of what design can achieve. I embrace this interconnectedness as a vital component of the design process.

As I reflect on my experiences, I recognize that the evolution of design is a reflection of societal change. The context in which we operate shapes our creative endeavors, pushing us to adapt and innovate. This dynamic relationship between design and culture compels me to stay attuned to emerging trends and shifting paradigms, ensuring that our work remains relevant and impactful.

Ultimately, my relationship with design is a lifelong commitment. I approach each challenge with enthusiasm and resilience, knowing that every setback is an opportunity for growth. The road ahead may be long, but with each step, I find renewed inspiration and purpose, fueled by the belief that thoughtful design has the power to inspire, connect, and transform our world.
