?? Design Like a Pro: Three Best Practices from Our Design Team

Even with an amazing design tool like Visme, it’s easy for users to make simple design mistakes. So how do you keep your design professional and polished as the template but customized with your own personal touch. We asked our graphic designers to share some of their best design practices that even beginners can follow.?

Design Tip #1: Less is Always More

“As a designer, I find that some non-designers often include too much text in their designs. To create a better balance between text and graphics, it’s helpful to summarize the content and maybe use additional slides to spread out the information. Not everything needs to be included, so focus on what’s essential.”

- Alex, Design Manager?

If you’re guilty of adding too much text or information on your designs, this is usually the primary culprit when your design starts to look less polished. Less is better than more when it comes to not only text but images, icons and designs.?

Here are some actionable steps Alex suggest you take before you start or while you add copy to your design:

  • Summarize Text: Simplify your text to create a better balance with graphics. Being clear and concise is far better than being clever or overly informed.?
  • Use Multiple Slides: If you’re creating a presentation or document spread your additional information across multiple pages if needed.
  • Highlight Key Points: Once you’ve made your information concise, use widgets, icons, or design elements to draw attention to important information.?
  • Make Important Data Stand Out: Use larger or bold text for better visibility and reduce reading time. This includes headings or subheadings, not the body of the text itself.?
  • Use Visme Hotspots: This feature allows you to add links, additional documents, videos and more in neat, highlighted sections of your design without adding unnecessary clutter.?

Design Tip #2: Research Before You Design

“Do a little research on the topic you are going to design so it is easier to get inspiration for the graphic line, that is, the use of colors, fonts, shapes and photos. Once you have that in mind, try to preserve the style, don’t go beyond 2-3 types of fonts, maintain contrasting colors, and eye-catching photos.”

- Fiorella, Graphic Designer

By researching before you design, you gain a solid understanding of your desired outcome and ensure you’re informed about your audience’s expectations.

After your research, apply Fiorella’s advice with these steps:

  • Limit Font Choices: Use no more than 2 or 3 types of fonts to maintain consistency and avoid clashing. Try to learn which fonts pair well together.
  • Use Contrasting Colors: Ensure color contrasts nicely together to help elevate your designs.
  • Incorporate Eye-Catching Photos: Select photos that draw attention and compliment your design. Use stock images or your own photos.
  • Balance Design and Information: Avoid clutter by focusing on a design that clearly communicates your central message. Remember, less is more.

Design Tip #3: Get Feedback?

“It’s important to always get feedback from an extra pair of eyes. Try not to allow too many people to provide feedback, as that can bring more confusion than clarity. Ask a select few and take it from there. If you have a friend who is a designer, that’s even better!”

- Hylie, Graphic Designer

Last but definitely not least, getting feedback on your design is needed. Being so close to your work, you might overlook details that could make your design perfect.

Feedback can help improve readability, accessibility, and other elements you might not have considered. Choose a select group of people to provide constructive feedback, and use their insights to help you grow as a designer in Visme.
