'Design for How People Learn': Chapter 10
Here is my summary of chapter 10 of 'Design for How People Learn' by?Julie Dirksen.
What does learning look like?
In this chapter, Julie Dirksen describes a variety of ways that learning occurs outside of formal classroom environments, including:
Learning experiences
She identifies six stages of learning experiences, which could include a mixture of formal and informal experiences:
Balancing formal and informal learning
She describes how to balance formal and informal learning. Formal learning is better for communicating explicit rule sets, whereas informal learning can be better for more tacit skills. Formal learning can often only give an explanation of general principles, so advice can be helpful for how to apply the principles in a specific situation. Informal learning can be more flexible and up-to-date, so is helpful for information that changes regularly.
Working out loud
Jane Bozarth writes about the importance of showing your work to help you and others in this article. She and Julie Dirksen both point out that this doesn't need to be too hard. We can learn just as much from a quick video filmed on a mobile phone as from something beautiful and overengineered.
Learning communities
Julie Dirksen recommends www.elearningheroes.com as a community that is very helpful for people who build learning, regardless of whether or not they are using Articulate Storyline. In this series of videos from a conference, Tom Kuhlmann talks about the motivation and strategies behind developing and growing the Elearning Heroes community:
Amy Jo Kim works in the area of social experience design. She identifies several concepts from game-playing that can be transferred to learning experiences. For example, she talks about the lifecycle of a player, from Newbie, to Regular, to Enthusiast, which could be likened to the need for onboarding, habit-building, and mastery, and the need for providing for all these levels of learners in a learning community.
Jane Bozarth also talks about the role of social media in learning in this article, distinguishing between social learning and social media for learning.
Curation
David Kelly writes about the importance of curation in this article. He adapts Rohit Barhava's The 5 Models of Content Curation to describe five layers of curation:
