In a few short weeks, America will choose its next leader - all in the midst of an overwhelming and unprecedented global upheaval of public health, economic recession, and growing racial tension. Which big problems are on our minds? How are they influencing our decisions? Furthermore, how are they influencing the way we design? And how is design helping us understand our decisions?
As creatives aiming to serve our users and clients, it can feel natural to remain impartial in politics. To be honest, I’ve spent ample time vacillating around the topic out of fear of its weight and polarization. However, after talking to so many of you, I now sense the urgency to lean in and face the subject head on with the help of your voices.
Designers decide what the world should look and feel like, planning a continuously evolving ecosystem of objects, spaces, and systems that shape and are shaped by the practices of daily life. Thus, while the relationship between politics and design may not be immediately obvious, we now see that design is a tool for figuring out just how society functions - what it values, how it separates people from one another, and the trade-offs that inevitably come to be made. Design is indeed a political tool. We can choose to ignore it, or harness its power to implement change.
Who in design is actively solving political problems?
Who in design is fearlessly framing political issues to provide clarity in our choices?
Who can help us to understand our current political situation, and more importantly, harness the power of design to take action?
Let’s expand this challenging but much needed conversation with our talented and vibrant design community. Together, we can work toward clarity amidst the chaos.
