VISION "DESIGN BEYOND THE HUMAN"?

  • We propose to design beyond the human, by which we mean to acknowledge the relational ecosystem of interdependencies between species – human and other-than-human – that we are part of.
  • We believe that design can help create thriving ecosystems of mutual symbiosis for mutual enrichment, not for exploitation.?
  • Design can also address social inequity and climate change.
  • We believe in designing not for product obsolescence but for endurance, regeneration, recuperation, and repurposing.
  • We believe in design for a full circular life cycle.

Design beyond the human?- Relational & Symbiotic-

If design is “how we shape the world according to human intentions” (von Busch, 2021: 16), we need to acknowledge the downsides of those intentions as well. Social and environmental consequences of mass production and mass consumption of designed products can bring material wealth but this human-centric way of understanding and doing design can also shape social inequity and climate change. Taking this into consideration, we propose to design beyond the human, by which we mean to acknowledge the relational ecosystem of interdependencies between species – human and other-than-human – that we are part of.?

We believe that design can help create thriving ecosystems of mutual symbiosis. As environmental philosopher Yogi Hale Hendlin writes, “Histories of symbiosis are cultivated, not merely accidental.” (Hendlin, 2019: 47).

At INTERDISE?O MOMPOX22, we encourage the consideration of the human communities as well as the lives of other-than-humans, of which we humans live in different forms of relational symbiosis.
