Design for Accessibility

Design accessible websites and apps for people with different abilities is necessary to improve their user experience.

Being inclusive towards your audience is becoming increasingly relevant especially in some sectors: healthcare, educational, public sector, banking etc..

It's also essential to meeting international standards and local regulations about Accesibility.

We are responsible for making our services or products inclusive and accessible to people in different contexts:

  • people with disabilities
  • temporary disabilities (lost eyeglasses..)
  • situational limitations (noisy environment, slow internet connections..)

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) is an international standard developed by?the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI), a project by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

To design Accessibility it is important to keep in mind the 4 principles of Accessibility:

  1. ?Perceivable - content should be perceivable, informations and contents must be perceived not only by sight. For example: adding an alternative text (alt text) to images allows them to be translated into audio.
  2. Operable - user interface should be operable, it is necessary to ensure effective and simple access to information and content through the visual interface. For example: use semantic elements and colors.
  3. Understandable - content should be understandable, users must be able not only to perceive the content, but also to understand it. For example: it helps users avoid and fix errors when filling out a form.
  4. Robust - the website or app should be robust, it is necessary that the service or digital product is able to adapt to various devices, browsers and that is marked in step with technological development or it will become obsolete. For example: choose to support older browser versions up to a certain limit.

Accessibility can be measured?according to the following scale:

  • A:?the minimum requirement for accessibility
  • AA:?a medium or good level of accessibility
  • AAA:?the gold standard of accessibility

Dealing with different sectors such as medical and educational, it is necessary for WellD to pay attention to accessibility.

Here some screen from our Telehealth App case study.

We pay attention on color contrast, choice of typography, focus on important informations, use multiple styles for different states, include textual labels for inputs and form elements, give clear and informative feedback and organize content visually with relevant headings and spacing.
