Design For 3D additive manufacturing FDM FFF

As advocates of 3D printing, we should always aim to demonstrate how documents should be configured, much like the Blender Foundation does with its annual “open movies,” sharing short films to teach the community workflows and stimulate user creativity through advanced methods.
That said, this is not a new problem, and I have observed in the documents that Bambulab release an increasing level of curation and improvement. This report aims to address this issue further.

From my perspective, the file in question is reasonably well-designed, but I have ideas on how to improve both slicing settings and modeling.

Modeling
As seen in the image above, this “lock” pin could be printed without supports, as demonstrated both in the design and the included 3MF files. I’ve already printed these and confirmed they work. While the angle I used is not ideal, it prints successfully without supports.

In the image above, we have two related parts. Why use support material for both when we can align the parts in the slicer so they support each other? Properly configuring the gaps between the two ensures everything functions correctly, as shown in my 3MF file. For optimization, I marked angle “C,” which is easy to support. However, if designed from scratch, it could be done without any supports. Since I didn’t have the original and had to modify the STL in Blender, I opted for the simplest method to prove my point. While the implementation lacks precision, it demonstrates that my method works.
Slicing
In my opinion, we should never alter print profiles and should discourage users from doing so. Instead, properties of individual parts should be adjusted without changing the profiles. That said, BambuLab done this partially: they adjusted properties for some parts but also changed print profiles. While it works, I believe it’s not the best approach. If you want to know more please study the 3MF file I’ve shared.
Another issue is combining multicolored files with solid color files. This increases the risk of failure and should be handled separately.
