??Dermatology Apps: Stuck in 2018 or Ready for a Breakthrough???
Despite the rapid evolution of technology, the question arises: have dermatology Apps truly advanced since 2018, or are we on the dawn of a much-needed breakthrough?
?? In 2018, researchers from the University of Birmingham pinpointed three critical issues in skin cancer diagnosis apps: the absence of rigorous trials, a lack of specialist input, and technological flaws.
?? Later in 2022, an analysis revealed that only 99 out of 632 dermatology apps available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store (about 15%) claimed to use artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning.
?? Recently in 2024, a study published in JAMA Dermatology found that among 909 dermatology-related Apps employing AI algorithms, only 41 were deemed worthy of detailed analysis.
The potential for Apps in dermatology is vast, promising to revolutionize patient access to care and validated information, and improve patient counseling. Yet, hurdles such as algorithm transparency, data usage, and user privacy persist.
?
Before developing yet another App, it's crucial to address these challenges and ponder essential questions: Where is the conversation already happening, and is an App the best medium to engage?
Innovative projects to watch:
?? VisualDx & Aysa: Beyond an app, this platform offers personalized guidance for dermatology concerns, enhancing discussions between patients and healthcare providers. VisualDx
?? MDalgorithms: This project uses AI to make dermatology advice more accessible, democratizing care with technology. MDalgorithms
These examples showcase how innovation can extend beyond traditional Apps, fostering meaningful community interactions and improving access to dermatology care.
