Derive Recruiting-Breaking barriers of Gender stereotyping

According to the Social Role Theory, the roles that women and men play are dynamic structures that are altered by both actual and perceived changes.

Societal and cultural beliefs and traditions have had a major influence in gender dynamics and role constructions, especially in a country like India with a history of expectations and ideas that influence gender equity.

We are living in an era that is powered by digitisation and women empowerment, with a number of female entrepreneurs and leaders marking their way in diverse fields across health, education, technology, politics and business. However, there is also another side to our country which has witnessed an estimated 4-12 million sex selective abortions of girl child in different states over the past three decades.

Gender Stereotypes

Gender stereotypes are basically generalisations about the diverse roles being played by men and women in a society which have evolved over years in different societies.

Women have been considered as a softer sex, hence the duties of childcare, home chores and other routine domestic work is synonymous with the female gender. Alternatively, men are considered to be physically strong and bestowed with the responsibility of earning livelihood for the family and generating family income.

This contrasting distribution of men and women in social roles and the expectations and inferences that it arises has led to the rise of gender stereotypical conceptions.

Exploring the limitations

Gender stereotyping has had negative implications for both men and women, on the society as a whole. However, it will not be an understatement to say that women have been at the helm of this stereotyping which has led to limitations in opportunities and development for women at a global level.

  • Lack of opportunities

In the past, gender stereotypes have limited women to conventional occupations like childcare, housework, and caregiving. Their access to a wide range of possibilities and career options has been restricted as a result, which has resulted in fewer leadership roles, lower incomes, and less financial independence.

  • Segregation of occupation

Occupational segregation, when specific professions or sectors are predominantly associated with either men or women, has been influenced by gender stereotypes. When it comes to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), women have frequently been encouraged to choose careers in teaching, nursing, or administration. Women's employment possibilities have been limited as a result, and the gender pay gap has persisted.

  • Judgment & Scrutiny

Women have been ever since subject to judgement and preconceived notions from society. Women are frequently expected to fulfil unrealistic expectations based on gender stereotypes, such as being nurturing, subservient and restricted to household chores. This can lead to a situation where women deviating from the standards are looked down upon.

  • Limited Voice and representation

Women may be underrepresented in politics, decision-making, and the media as a result of gender stereotypes. Stereotypes and gender disparities are reinforced when women's thoughts and voices are discounted or ignored.

  • Unequal distribution of household responsibilities

Women have always been given the major responsibility for providing care and handling household duties. This results in unequal amounts of unpaid labour and insufficient time for recreation, personal growth, and career advancement.

“Being a stay-at-home mother makes me proud. Even though it isn't an easy decision, I am eternally appreciative for the chance to spend this time with my child. I don't believe that it is possible to manage being a mother, having a career, and being a wife with utmost perfection. I won't ever be flawless, but I enjoy the challenge. I appreciate Derive giving me the chance to work from home and take advantage of parenthood.”

“I'm a mother of two beautiful kids and started my journey with Derive back in 2014 when my first son was a year old. Coming from an HR background, I was looking for something to restart my career and Derive was my first choice back then. Today, after completing almost a decade in this journey, I can say it was the correct choice. Advantage of working here is that we are our own boss and we choose our own terms. We enjoy the liberty to choose our own time and place of work. With the right blend of things, we can earn a good source of income. Though work life can sometimes get bumpy, I enjoy the journey.”

- Pallavi A.R (Sr. Recruitment Consultant)
