INTO THE DEPTHS

INTO THE DEPTHS

Do you equate niching with boredom?

The most effective personal brands are the ones where someone planted their flag in the dirt and claimed their niched territory of mastery.

For the highly talented professional, niching feels like leaving talent, earnings and professional potential on the table.

It feels like setting fire to everything you have built to corral your future into one path that could or could not get you where you seek to go.

It feels like burning bridges with your history, your education, and your expertise.

I get it.

After retiring from clinical dentistry and selling my practice, I went on a six year binge of building brand after brand around my unique talents: coaching dentists to niche into their passion, coaching adults to tell stories through dance, and building personal brands for professionals on LinkedIn.

Yep, it looks like a mess when I write out my journey and... it was.

Outside observers wondered what I was doing and whether I could do all of it at any level of competence?

Even though each brand thrived, as a personal brand, I was confusing.

But, I wanted to color the world with every crayon in my box so that I didn't miss out on my potential.

It was a huge marketing mistake that still haunts me now.

I am reminded of it each time I get on a call or podcast when someone says, "so... you work mostly with dentists to build their personal brands, right?" (because of my education of being a dentist).

Or, "it's cool that dance was such a hobby for you" not realizing I danced professionally alongside my other careers while being paid well for it.

Annoyingly, my history muddles what I am niched into now.

Eventually, it will fade, but what if you could avoid this all together?

This is why I preach hard on the topic of niching and intentional design of your personal brand - because if you muddy the waters when you start, then, when you do get clear, it is far harder to start unleashing influence so you can change the world with what you know.

"Do as I say, not as I did" aside, niching will not have your twiddling your thumbs, bored out of your mind.

Any singular topic of your expertise and experience you choose to niche into to become uniquely masterful at, has depth, width and color you have never fathomed until you burn away all the distractions taking you away from being able to go deep.

Your history, your education, your expertise... is not ash.

It will be repurposed into your niche or used to inform the masterful niche you are building.

I get to use all my crayons - just in a cohesive way now.

I use my dance background to teach people how to use their physical form to create captivating content for their personal brand.

I used my dental practice niching background to help people niche into their passion for their personal brand.

I use my LinkedIn background to help clients leverage the platform to gain attention for their personal brand.

Niching has given me greater depth of understanding of the tools of my craft because I burned down the distraction of my dance and dentistry companies and niched into becoming masterful at burning down what is hold clients back from unleashing influence through their personal brand.

I've burned away a lot and, the funny thing is, the more deep I go with my tools, the more I realize how much deeper I can go.

There is no boredom in my world, just ever increasing depth of knowledge.

I was scared to niche.

I was scared to strike the match and burn down what wasn't working.

You will feel the same.

You will feel fear.

You will feel you are setting fire to everything you have built to corral your future into one path that could or could not take you where you seek to go.

You will feel you are burning bridges with your history, your education, and your expertise.

But once you have burned down the distractions, the journey of emerging your mastery from the ash comes next.

And the depth of knowledge that ensues will surprise you.
