Depth of Knowledge (DOK), Employability, Job Market Economics to Metacognitive Knowledge

Breadth of learning, as you may have noticed, is more based on academic-related knowledge vs. the depth of knowledge (DOK) that leads to employability. Employability, Economy, Job Market, and consultancy services coexist as a ecosystem.

Employability is a set of skills which prepare an individual to enter, advance and stay in the workforce. The goal of understanding employability and the economy is to help young people select post-secondary educational and training options that will help them to develop their career and life plans. An important step toward this end is the ability to analyze and evaluate opportunities in business world as an employee or as an entrepreneur, as well as those available in the student's chosen field of study or training. Job market information can fuel this analysis by providing both separate and integrated data sets based on skills, education level and other factors once an individual has been established into the job market.

Breadth of learning helps with increased employability by referring to the full span of knowledge of a subject. Depth of learning refers to the extent to which specific topics are focused upon, amplified and explored. Essentially, depth of knowledge indicates how deeply learner must know, understand, and be aware of what they are learning in order to attain and explain answers, outcomes, results, and solutions. Depth over breadth means, it is about picking the things that matter most to you and doing them with passion, purpose, and intent.

Depth of Knowledge helps us hypothesize cognitive consistency by breaking down and categorizing the different thought processes required to correctly solve a problem.

It was interesting to discover Blooms 6 level and Dr. Norman Webb's DoK framework. Depth of Knowledge or DoK is another type of framework used to identify the level of rigor for an assessment. Dr. Webb developed DoK to categorize activities according to the level of complexity in thinking.
