Depression is With Us: Is There a Way Out Besides Suicide?

Depression is With Us: Is There a Way Out Besides Suicide?

It breaks my heart to wake up to the devastating news of a talented gospel artist who ended his own life. Here was someone who brought so much hope and inspiration through his music, yet inside, he was battling a storm so fierce that he felt there was no other way out. He recorded and completed a song with his church colleagues, sang in church with his beautiful voice one last time, and then, in the quiet hours, he decided to end it all.

He left behind a note apologizing to his loved ones, asking his friends to take care of his family, and expressing that he felt like a failure. He revealed that he had undergone surgery three times on his testicles, living with the pain and shame for four long years without telling anyone. He confessed that he had felt dead inside since 2020, carrying a burden too heavy to share.

But even in his last words, I believe there was more he didn’t say, more pain that he couldn’t put into words. This is the heartbreaking reality of depression... it convinces us to suffer in silence.

His note.

Why Do So Many Suffer in Silence?

1. Could It Be The Society We Grow Up In? In many cultures, we are raised to believe that "men don’t cry." From a young age, boys are taught to suppress their emotions, to be strong, to never show vulnerability. They grow up believing that asking for help is a sign of weakness, that real men endure pain without a word. This mindset becomes a prison that traps countless men in their suffering, making it difficult to open up when they are overwhelmed by life’s challenges.

2. Could It Be The Man-Made Religious Doctrines and Burdens? Strong religious teachings can sometimes create an environment where members feel they must live up to impossible standards. The pressure to be perfect, to never doubt, and to always have faith can be overwhelming. When someone does struggle, they often feel as though they are letting their faith down, making it even harder to admit that they need help. This can create a deep sense of guilt and failure, further isolating them in their pain.

3. Could It Be The Mental Health Not Taken Seriously In many societies, mental health is still not given the attention it deserves. It is often dismissed as a phase, a weakness, or something that people should just "snap out of." This lack of understanding and support makes it difficult for those struggling to seek help. When mental health is treated as a taboo topic, it leaves individuals feeling ashamed of their struggles, afraid to be judged or misunderstood.

4. Fear of Being Laughed At or Trolled One of the biggest reasons people keep their struggles to themselves is the fear of being ridiculed or judged. In today’s world, where everyone’s life is open to scrutiny, the fear of being laughed at or trolled is very real. Many choose to suffer in silence rather than risk being humiliated by those who do not understand their pain. This fear of judgment creates an invisible wall, making it nearly impossible for them to reach out.

Finding a Way Out: Solutions to Combat Depression

  1. Encourage Open Conversations Creating a safe space for people to talk openly about their struggles without fear of judgment is crucial. We need to shift the mindset that vulnerability is a weakness and instead celebrate the courage it takes to seek help.
  2. Build Strong Support Systems Support systems, whether through friends, family, or support groups, play a critical role in helping individuals navigate their mental health journey. Knowing that there are people who genuinely care and will listen without judgment can be life-changing.
  3. Mental Health Education It’s essential to educate communities about the importance of mental health. This includes teaching people to recognize the signs of depression and other mental health issues and encouraging early intervention before the situation worsens.
  4. Seek Professional Help Professional therapy and counseling should be encouraged and normalized. There should be no shame in seeking guidance from mental health professionals who can provide the right tools and strategies to deal with depression.
  5. Break the Stigma We need to work collectively to break the stigma surrounding mental health. Let’s be mindful of our words, show empathy, and understand that everyone has a battle we know nothing about. Ending the stigma can lead to a culture of acceptance and support.

Final Thoughts

Depression is real, and it’s with us. It’s a battle that many face in silence due to societal pressures, unrealistic expectations, lack of understanding, and the fear of ridicule. But even in the darkness, there is hope, and there are ways out of the pain.

At No Human Is Useless, we are on a mission to spread this message of resilience and hope across communities, schools, and beyond. We believe that every person has a purpose, and no one should ever feel like they have to face their struggles alone. Let's work together to create a world where mental health is prioritized, and where asking for help is seen as a sign of courage, not weakness.

William Plange thank you so much for highlighting this. So many of us struggle with depression in silence. Thankful for everyone who found a way to get help and are testimonies today. There is hope when any of the ways you listed is explored along with believing and trusting that God has a plan for each of our lives. Nothing is too hard for God to do and he is able to place people in our lives to help us just when we need it most. Sending prayers for anyone struggling today. There is hope! ????????

We live in a challenging and complex world that requires resilience and adaptability to navigate successfully. Developing mental strength is essential for coping with difficulties and thriving in such an environment. One of the key factors that can hinder our ability to navigate challenges is holding onto limiting beliefs and values. Negative thought patterns created can impair our emotional intelligence, making it difficult to respond effectively to adversity.

There is always a way out. My mom always said "where there's a will there's a way". You must have the will because there's always a way. You must find the way or surround yourself with people who are willing to show you the way. ?? In His service by His grace, Margaret Martinez

William Plange a difficult topic and conversation indeed. All I can think is if it was more open to talk about our feelings we would have more friends and family with us today.
