Depression: One of the Deadliest Threats to Humankind
Hi My Friend,
What do former Miss USA Cheslie Kryst, Soul Train host Don Cornelius, comedian Robin Williams, singer Phyllis Hyman, celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain and journalist Iris Chang all have in common?
They each died by suicide after suffering from depression.?
While the untimely deaths of these high-profile successful individuals certainly made the news, what often isn’t discussed is just how widespread depression is and how many people are at risk of committing suicide.
Here’s the truth: Depression is a silent killer that often goes unchecked. In fact, about every 11 minutes, someone dies by suicide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The CDC reports that suicide is the second leading cause of death for those 10-34 years old, the fourth leading cause among people ages 35-44 and the fifth leading cause among people ages 45-54.?
Even more concerning, the latest research from the Boston University School of Public Health notes that depression in adults has tripled since before the pandemic to 32.8%, affecting 1 in every 3 Americans.
These statistics are alarming! With September being Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, I wanted to share some signs to look for that increase a person’s suicide risk:?
Now, depression doesn’t always lead to suicide, but it CAN, and it’s more likely to occur if one or more of these things is going on in someone’s life.?

Check in on your family and friends because suicide does not discriminate.?
It does not matter how much money you have.?
It does not matter if you’re outwardly smiling and appear “OK.”?
Suicide is a problem we need to start talking about more.
That’s why my team and I at Affinity Health Affairs, LLC is on a mission for suicide prevention. While we have helped to save countless lives, there’s much more work to be done. Our team provides support to those who are struggling, educates friends and family members about how to identify the warning signs and offers resources to those who need help.
If you or someone you know needs help, please don’t hesitate to reach out. You can find more information on our website. Join us on this mission for suicide prevention. We’re just a click or call away.
