Depression, The Flagrant Slayer

Depression, The Flagrant Slayer

Pressure… pressure to excel in studies, pressure to shine in extra-curricular activities, pressure to meet daily numbers , pressure to land the plum job available… this rat race to be the ‘best’ or at least comparable to the ‘Benchmarked Best’ is today leading to a lot of untimely and uncalled for demises . This humongous pressure is taking a huge toll on the mental and physical being of kids, students, adults – people from all strata of society.

Inability to be the best or not getting his due from the world is causing mental agony to many, and is leading to depression which in turn is creating health problems. People are glued to one or the other screens and have almost forgotten to communicate with their loved ones. They don’t discuss their problems and ultimately succumb to the pressure. Due to the exertion of excessive pressure on themselves, several people become patients of Self Pity.;There are many, some of them discuss about it, most of them don’t , who are addicted to anti-depressants to help them cross the barriers of life. And when medicines don’t help at times it turns fatal for those who suffer from ‘chronic’and ‘manic’ depression.

Few years back people probably never knew about the disease called ‘loneliness / depression’. Today however, it is a common phenomenon with many going through different phases of it. The epidemic ranges in various stages and ‘acute depression’ is the one of the most severe forms of the disease. It is not like the depression one suffers from losing a loved one or happens due to some hormonal imbalance . It is acute, long-lasting and may even last a lifetime and at times may claim lives also.

When a person starts feeling he is a failure and feels guilty and worthless & constantly feels sadness, fatigue for no apparent reason, resorts to outbursts over trivial issues, the loss of interest in all pleasure activities and hobbies, he needs a shoulder to cry on , he needs a friend for solace.

Today for almost every disease there is a cure… Except Corona ( Currently ) yes that is what the doctors think. But then ‘acute depression’ cannot be just cured by medicines only. The sufferer needs constant support from parents, friends, relatives and even from workplace professionals. The human touch is the most important to sufferers… words of encouragement, may be a comforting hug or praise… all can have a wonderful effect on him and lift his spirits.

“Mental pain is less dramatic than physical pain, but it is more common and harder to bear.”

Peer pressure today has affected the human brain in a major way. Danger looms large for professionals like us in this rat race. Unless handled carefully and promptly, depression in any form may turn out to be huge curse. The time has come to relax, take a deep breath and take the next step forward. Otherwise there will be no step to take at all.

Yes! Depression is the latest scourge! Amidst all the online connections and platforms most of us are living a lonely life. Avoiding our fears while poring over the ubiquitous screens. We must practice social distancing too but we must interact emotionally. The company of loved ones and friends is therapeutic and just the medicine we need.

The problem with mental depression is that people dont acknowledge it as a valid illness leading to loss of appreciation and understanding of the problem... This further compounds the problem.... Hope this incident triggers not just a conversation but also a long term change in thought process.
