Dependency Analytics at FOSS ASIA 2019
FOSS ASIA was held in Singapore at the Life Long Learning Institute in Paya Lebar. This was the 10th anniversary of this event which made it a wonderful celebration of FOSS. The event is very beginner friendly and is frequented by students as well as professionals.
The event spanned across four days from March 14 - 17 2019 with 11 tracks. We presented our talk in the ML and AI track.
Notably, we also had a presence at the CentOS booth in the exhibition hall where our product demo was well received by the audience. We also got some constructive feedback from the audience regarding how we can make our extension more useful and productive for the developers. I will specifically like to thank Rich Bowen for allowing us to present at CentOS booth and Aurelein Geron for a long constructive conversation on the product.
Coming to our talk, me and Sunil Samal presented the talk about our Dependency Analytics Platform. We started with the current state of open source components and how we at Red Hat are committing ourselves to the goals of higher confidence, increased productivity levels and reduced development risk among developers when they use open source components to build their applications. Here are the key aspects that we consider while showing the right dependencies:
- Security Vulnerability - Checks for CVE in any of your application dependencies and suggests remedial versions.
- License Compatibility - Checks for License compatibility between your application dependencies and suggests you a project level license.
- Popularity & Maintainability - Shows GitHub popularity metrics (stars, forks, contributors etc) for your application dependencies.
- Completeness of the Application Stack - AI based recommendation system for your application dependencies.
Towards the end, we wrapped the talk with a demo of our VSCode extension. You can find our talk here:

I will like to thank our team at Red Hat for providing us this opportunity and for their commitment towards our goals. Apart from that I will like to thank FOSS ASIA team for providing us the platform to present our work and especially Michael Cannon for beautiful pictures and feedback. I will also like to thank our friends at IBM, Zack YEO and Christopher Lim for their support. Lastly, this talk wouldn't have been possible without our friends at Red Hat.
Will hopefully see you guys next year at FOSS ASIA! Till then, good bye! :)
