Denzel Gets It...

Happy Monday friends. I hope you all had a fantastic weekend. I came across a quote from the great Denzel Washington (hat tip to my bud Matt Ayotte ) that immediately resonated with me.

"A bird sitting on a tree is never afraid of the branch breaking, because her trust is not on the branch but on its own wings."

This offers profound insights into the nature of trust, self-reliance, and resilience. When related to being a connected leader, this quote encapsulates the essence of leadership that is deeply intertwined with self-confidence, adaptability, and fostering trust within a team.

Trusting Yourself

Just like the bird trusts its wings, a good leader trusts in their own skills and abilities. You know that your leadership isn’t just about having everything perfectly in place (the strong branch), but about your ability to handle whatever comes your way. This confidence not only helps you stay calm, but it also shows your team that they can trust you.

Building Trust in Your Team

When you trust yourself, it's easier to build trust within your team. You’re not just the person who makes all the decisions; you’re someone who encourages everyone to bring their best to the table. This kind of trust creates a positive environment where people feel confident to share ideas and take initiative.

Being Adaptable and Resilient

A connected leader is adaptable. You’re ready to change course if things aren’t going as planned. Like the bird that can fly away if the branch breaks, you and your team can tackle challenges head-on. This resilience is something you cultivate in your team as well. By showing them how to handle setbacks, you help them become more flexible and strong in the face of change.

Leading by Example

Your calm and confident demeanor, especially during tough times, reassures your team. If you’re not panicking, they won’t either. This kind of leadership by example fosters a sense of stability and confidence within the team.

Creating a Supportive Environment

Finally, a connected leader creates a supportive environment. You make sure your team has the resources and encouragement they need to grow and take risks. This way, even if something goes wrong (like the branch breaking), your team is ready to spread its wings and find new solutions.

Denzel’s quote reminds us that being a connected leader is about trusting in your own abilities and fostering that same trust and confidence within your team. When everyone knows they can rely on themselves and each other, you create a strong, adaptable, and successful team.

What a great quote and build off of it. The leader who understands and trusts himself and his purpose can stand, move, take risks and redirect staying to purpose, not frozen in a comfort zone of "this is how we always did it". This will create something that burns bright with passion and persistence and direction always growing and going forward.
