Dentistry Beyond The Numbers: Episode 5 Recap
Marc Liechtung, D.M.D.
Executive Director of Partnership Development at Guardian Dentistry Partners & Managing Partner -NY / Inventor of Snap-On Smile
In our most recent podcast episode, my guest, Rolando Mia, and I had an in-depth discussion about a crucial aspect of running a successful dental practice... managing expenses. We dived into the essential areas where controlling expenses can truly make a difference in the profitability of your practice.
Here are the main highlights from the episode:
The Most Important Expense Buckets: We talked about the significance of controlling expenses across six key areas: salaries and benefits, labs, supplies, rent and expense, marketing and advertising, and professional fees. It's all about staying within the optimal range to ensure the best financial outcomes.
1. Salaries and Benefits: We emphasized the importance of keeping salaries and benefits between 45% and 55%, including evaluating staff salaries and benefits to align them with the practice's financial goals.
2. Labs and Supplies: We discussed the potential cost savings through digital workflow for managing lab expenses and the need to keep dental supplies within the range of 5% to 8% of the practice's spending.
3. Rent and Expense: I stressed the significance of keeping rent and expense within a tight range of 5% to 8% of the practice's top line revenue and warned against overspending on office spaces.
4. Marketing and Advertising: We emphasized allocating only 1% to 3% of the practice's revenue to marketing and advertising and discussed the critical role of effective in-house patient experiences in successful marketing.

5. Professional Services: We delved into the importance of managing professional fees and services within 1.5% of the practice's gross revenue and making informed financial decisions based on the practice's overall financial health.
Understanding and managing these expenses can truly be the difference between achieving a successful sale or missing a great opportunity.
Stay tuned for our upcoming episodes where we'll cover topics like practice efficiencies, work-life balance, and evaluating the financial performance of different dental practices.
I'd love to hear your thoughts and inputs, so feel free to share your comments or questions with us.
Wishing you continued success in your dental practice endeavors!
