Dental Sleep Medicine is like the pond in Stand By Me.

It is muddy. And murky. And full of fun and excitement.

And it's filled with leeches.

It is teeming with con artists; snake oil salesmen; and over-promising, under-delivering, take-the-money-and-run charlatans.

Most of them know it. Some don't. But most do.

Too many website "patient" testimonials are written by employees.

Too many "user" testimonials feature employees.

Too much "But wait, if you buy this today you'll also get a pair of ginsu knives and a free blah blah!"

Too much "You-Can't-Do-It-Without-My-Product-ism."

Way too much "I'll make you a billionaire" BS!

This is a medical profession.

Instead, it looks like the Wild West in the mid-19th century. Dental Sleep Medicine is where people flee to reinvent themselves after they've burnt every other bridge.

It is not transparent.

And after you've had some fun frolicking in the muddy pond with pals, when you get out - you feel dirty - you need a shower - and there's a strong possibility some leech will suck the life out of you until you faint.

I am not the Frank Serpico of DSM, & I am certainly not without sin. I've written some of those testimonials. I've ghostwritten far too many pieces knowing what was intended to pass as sound clinical information was just mediocre marketing malarkey.

Dental Sleep Medicine presents so much opportunity to help people - to save lives. It's true. 110% true.

And there are several great companies filled with many compassionate, driven, honorable, AND smart people.

There are some heroic dentists & driven team members.

There are a few really excellent educators too.

We want to do the right thing for patients, for practitioners, for the profession - FOR PEOPLE.

But the self-interested swindlers and self-absorbed scammers leave a stain on the profession that negatively colors the views of physicians, investors, and many dentists.

This is a self-limiting factor in the growth potential of the field.

If you're one of the leeches - you can't help that you suck. By definition, it's what you do. But everyone should avoid you.
