The Link Between Mental and Oral Health
While the connection between oral and systemic health is well-known, there is still much to learn about oral and mental health. Depression can significantly reduce motivation for self-care, which includes oral hygiene practices like brushing and flossing. Additionally, anxiety and depression can often lead to bruxism, which could cause further tooth damage. With nearly a third of US adults reporting symptoms of depression and anxiety in 2023, it’s imperative to be aware of the impact of mental health on dental care.

Fast [Dental] Fashion: A Dangerous Trend
Another dangerous dental trend, "fashion braces", is being propagated to younger generations through social media. These decorative braces are self-applied at home and can cause the wearer to develop loss of enamel, increased risk of oral infection, and ironically, misalignment. Sold on websites like Etsy for as much as $55, these aligners may contain harmful chemicals such as lead or cadmium and can cause cuts or become a choking hazard due to their lack of medical-grade glue.
