There are domesticated animal groups where 85% will need dental care at some point in their lives. It’s important to take this treatment seriously since dental issues can cause discomfort, pain and without treatment, even infection. In this case study a female Maine Coon Cat was brought in after dental surgery on both sides. The use of L-Mesitran Soft, containing Medical Grade Honey, proved to be extremely positive in the healing process.

A one-year-old female Maine Coon cat was diagnosed with ‘feline gingivitis stomatitis complex’ and needed tooth extraction of the affected teeth. Since both sides were affected, a split mouth design was feasible, in which each side could be treated differently. One side received no treatment as is the normal procedure, and the other side received a single application of L-Mesitran intrasocket, before primary closure.


The affected teeth in the mandible were extracted under anaesthesia. Only the right side of the sockets were filled with L-Mesitran Soft using a syringe that was pre-filled from a 15g tube. The sockets on the left side of the mouth did not receive any treatment and were closed without L-Mesitran Soft. No antibiotics were given.

Dental care with L-Mesitran Soft

After three days, the cat came to the clinic to follow the wound healing progression. There was a clear difference visible in wound healing, and redness. The right side of the mouth (L-Mesitran treated) was less red and healing was better than on the left untreated side.

Dental diseases are a major problem in domestic animals and a prevalence of up to 85% are reported in dogs. In severe cases, tooth extraction is unavoidable. This inevitably leads to intra-oral wounds that may cause pain or discomfort and that potentially get infected.?

Although antimicrobial therapy is generally considered unnecessary after oral surgery, in case of severe inflammation it is still provided to decrease the chance of infection. Current development of antibiotic resistance urges alternatives.

Medical grade honey (MGH) holds broad range antimicrobial activity via multiple mechanisms; the low pH, strong osmotic action, production of hydrogen peroxide, and presence of antimicrobial molecules. The vitamins C and E that are supplemented have synergistic antimicrobial activity with the raw medical grade honey. L-Mesitran enhances wound healing by creating a moist wound environment, promoting autolytic debridement, angiogenesis and reepithelialization. Conclusion

In this case, the split-mouth design supported that L-Mesitran enhanced healing and reduced inflammation. This clear difference after only 3 days demonstrates that L-Mesitran holds much promise for treating tooth extraction wounds.

In conclusion, Medical Grade Honey was effective to heal tooth extraction wounds and can serve as an alternative for antibiotics. L-Mesitran has antimicrobial and healing activity.
