In an inspiring step for AI and research, Denmark has launched Gefion, the nation’s most advanced AI supercomputer, poised to tackle pressing global issues in quantum computing, climate science, clean energy, biotechnology, and more. Named after a Norse goddess, Gefion is Denmark’s first sovereign AI infrastructure, made possible through collaboration between NVIDIA, the Novo Nordisk Foundation, and the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO).?

Powered by 1,528 NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPUs and the NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBand, Gefion’s immense processing capabilities make it one of the most powerful AI supercomputers globally. Officially inaugurated by King Frederik X of Denmark, NVIDIA’s CEO Jensen Huang, and Nadia Carlsten, CEO of the Danish Center for AI Innovation (DCAI), Gefion reflects Denmark’s commitment to leading scientific and technological advancements while preserving data sovereignty and enhancing its national AI ecosystem.?

Gefion’s mission spans across industries and research areas:?

  • Climate Science: The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) will leverage Gefion to deliver highly accurate weather forecasts, reducing analysis time from hours to mere minutes, using less energy than traditional forecasting methods.?

  • Drug Discovery and Healthcare: Pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk aims to accelerate AI-based drug discovery, advancing treatments through digital biology with Gefion’s assistance. University of Copenhagen researchers are developing genomic foundation models for disease mutation analysis and vaccine design, supporting healthcare breakthroughs that could transform lives.?

  • Quantum Computing: A team at the University of Copenhagen is advancing simulations of quantum computer circuits, edging closer to quantum supremacy, a key milestone where quantum systems outperform classical computers on complex calculations.? ?

Beyond its technical power, Gefion represents Denmark’s commitment to a new “Factory of Intelligence”. According to NVIDIA’s Jensen Huang, Gefion marks the beginning of an era where nations can independently harness AI with sovereign infrastructure, enabling local innovation and reinforcing Denmark's global standing in cutting-edge AI development. “What country can afford not to have this infrastructure?” Huang stated. “Denmark is inventing something fundamentally new—an industry atop the IT industry—where intelligence is manufactured.”?

The Danish Centre for AI Innovation will operate Gefion, providing academics, researchers, and industry leaders in Denmark with access to NVIDIA’s expertise and AI platforms like CUDA Quantum and BioNeMo for hybrid computing and biotechnology solutions. Housed in a 100% renewable energy facility by Digital Realty, Gefion embodies Denmark’s commitment to sustainability and ethical AI practices, emphasizing both data privacy and security.?

With Gefion, Denmark is equipped not only to address local and global challenges but to lead a new era of AI-driven solutions that aim to improve healthcare, advance climate action, and spur scientific discovery for societal benefit.?
