There are many misconceptions when it comes to the field of reading science. Our new Teacher Tip Tuesday series, Demystifying the Science of Reading, aims to debunk the myths and clarify what the science of reading truly is, and what it is not.

So, what is the science of reading, really?

It is decades of interdisciplinary research, tying together linguistics, educational psychology, and neuroscience in thousands of studies with one aim: uncovering how we learn to read, and how best to teach reading.

The science of reading is based on understanding the cognitive processes that underlie reading and using this knowledge to inform instruction. It emphasizes the importance of explicit, systematic instruction in phonics, along with developing vocabulary, fostering comprehension skills, and promoting a love of reading.
