Demystifying the Role of a Marine Surveyor in P&I Surveys.
In the vast and ever-evolving maritime industry, marine surveyors play a critical role in maintaining the safety and operability of vessels worldwide. But what exactly does this role entail, especially when it comes to P&I (Protection & Indemnity Insurance) surveys?
We had the pleasure of speaking with james carroll , Operations Executive here at Aalmar, to shed light on this aspect of maritime operations.
The Crucial Role of Independent Marine Surveyors
"Carrying out unbiased P&I surveys, we are essentially the eyes and ears for the clubs on board the vessels," explains James. With a focus on assessing the structure, machinery, and equipment of a ship, marine surveyors like those at Aalmar Surveys evaluate potential risks and compile comprehensive reports. These reports not only inform #P&I clubs about the vessel's current condition but also determine whether a ship remains seaworthy.
Why P&I Clubs Prefer Independent Surveyors
James speaks about the significance of P&I Insurance: "The importance is in the name. If they don’t have the cover, and something goes wrong, it can be disastrous."
When asked about the value independent marine surveyors bring to the table, James stresses the importance of independence and adaptability. While some P&I clubs have their own in-house teams, third-party surveyors offer an external network and the ability to "mobilise at very short notice."
A Proactive Approach to Surveys
Though some may assume surveyors primarily respond to accidents, James emphasises their role as primarily pre-emptive. These surveys happen frequently to ensure cargo safety and vessel condition. "The crew needs to know the cargo will be safe. We could also check the safe loading/unloading of the cargo, to sign it off and ensure it's in good condition."
Emphasising the value of regular maintenance, James believes it's the "bread and butter" of marine surveys. He provides an example of a recent incident in Pakistan, where lack of upkeep led to equipment failure. "You have to do things by the book and not cut corners," he cautions.

Understanding P&I Entry and annual need
Explaining the term P&I entry, James points out that ship owners enlist their vessels with clubs for coverage. For this coverage to commence, a P&I condition survey is necessary. "If we went on and something didn’t meet their requirements, they would ask for action," James says. Once this entry survey is complete, vessels receive their certificate of entry, which outlines what's covered and what isn't. "P&I surveys are carried out at roughly the same time every year," explains James, with follow-up checks as required. This ensures that vessels maintain the standards set during the initial entry survey.
Behind the Scenes: The Role of the Survey Executive
James’s responsibilities as Operations Coordinator/Client relations involve coordinating and ensuring that surveyors are equipped and prepared. "From that point, I would find a surveyor, ensure they meet the club's requirements, and get the surveyor up to speed on the task they are undertaking."
Technology and P&I Surveys
The maritime world is no stranger to technology, and Aalmar Surveys is at the forefront. James mentions the utility of ultrasonic testing and the shift towards safer camera equipment for specific environments. Furthermore, communication tools like WhatsApp and software like Eye Auditor have modernised the survey process.
Final Thoughts
James finds the variability in P&I survey requirements fascinating and expresses his eagerness for to delve deeper into P&I claims. "Day-to-day I love knowing the significant role I play in the world of shipping," he concludes.
This enlightening conversation with James Carroll serves as a testament to the indispensable contributions of marine surveyors in ensuring the safety and functionality of vessels worldwide. It's a complex, demanding, and often underappreciated role, but as James emphasises, it's also one of profound importance and gratification.
