Demystifying ChatGPT - Just Use It, Ignore the Hype

Demystifying ChatGPT - Just Use It, Ignore the Hype

Hey everyone! ??

I've been amazed lately by something. Many of my tech-savvy friends have yet to discover the power of ChatGPT. Even my friends who have tried it, most haven't thought about the ways it can save time. Today, I want to share how this AI has become an integral part of my work day.

For those living under a rock (shielded from the ChatGPT influencers), ChatGPT is a language model developed by OpenAI. Think of it as a digital assistant that can read, understand, and generate text. From drafting emails to developing code or even offering insights on complex Excel formulas, it can do a variety of tasks that traditionally require a human touch.

Now, let's start with two important points. The first is that ChatGPT can "hallucinate" data, i.e., it can sometimes generate information that isn't entirely accurate, as it's basing its responses on vast, but not always perfect, datasets. It's just like a human; we can also make things up, right? We're just more forgiving with people. ?? When you use it, focus on use cases where you can verify the results (like running code or domains you know a lot about).

Second important point is that ChatGPT utilizes the context of the conversation to generate responses. So, for the best results, stick to one topic per chat. Imagine it like a focused conversation - you wouldn't abruptly switch from discussing baking to fashion advice. If you do this, it is going to use your baking conversation to suggest what you will wear.

In the past week, ChatGPT has effectively done 60 hours of work with about 10 hours of input from me. Writing code, crafting corporate emails about break room etiquette, and untangling intricate Excel formulas - it's like having a highly efficient intern on call 24/7.

The ChatGPT intern, however, is unique. It's as if they've read every word on the internet, retained most of it, and can provide answers from memory. They're often right, but like any intern, they might occasionally make mistakes.

And just like any tool, using ChatGPT is a skill. The more precise and clear your instructions, the better its responses. This isn't just about AI; it's a generalizable skill that pays dividends when coordinating with humans too. It has helped me get better at conveying tasks to my direct reports.

I wrote this post in collaboration with ChatGPT in just 3 minutes, by providing a structured list of points. I hope my friends will give it a try and experience how it can save time and expand thinking about a range of tasks.

Like this post for example. I want my friends to use it, but I don't want have to spend the time writing a great post explaining why.

Get after it, ChatGPT intern!

I even used the Bing version to draw the picture for this article.

I used it to help someone update a resume. It’s amazing how much it speeds up the process. Testing it on other projects, has been very helpful.
