Demonstrate Leadership Behavior

Demonstrate Leadership Behavior

These days, where projects are becoming increasingly complex and multifaceted, the role of leadership in project management cannot be overstated. As I was reading the 12 principles of project management outlined in the Sixth edition of the Project Management Body of Knowledge by PMI, one statement caught my attention: "Leadership is different than authority." This simple yet profound assertion holds a crucial distinction that often gets cluttered in the leadership discourse.

Projects, by their very nature, present unique challenges that demand effective leadership. Unlike routine business operations, projects involve multiple stakeholders from various organizations, departments, functions, or vendors who may not interact regularly. In this complex web of collaboration, the traditional notion of authority alone falls short in driving success.

The principle of "Demonstrate Leadership Behaviors" underscores the significance of leadership in project management. It emphasizes that effective leadership is essential for fostering a conducive environment where teams can thrive and achieve their objectives. Here, leadership transcends titles or hierarchical positions; any project team member can exhibit leadership behaviors, irrespective of their role.

Moreover, effective leaders in project management are adept at adapting their leadership styles to the nuances of each situation. They understand that what works in one context may not necessarily yield the same results elsewhere. By recognizing and respecting the diverse motivations of team members, they can tailor their approach to inspire and empower individuals to perform at their best.

Furthermore, exemplary leaders in project management uphold principles of honesty, integrity, and ethical conduct. Their actions serve as a guiding light for their teams, instilling trust and confidence in the project's direction and objectives. By embodying these values, leaders cultivate a culture of accountability and transparency, laying the foundation for success.

In essence, the distinction between leadership and authority is paramount in the realm of project management. While authority may grant certain privileges or responsibilities, true leadership is earned through actions, character, and influence. By embracing the principles of effective leadership outlined in the PMI framework, project managers can navigate the complexities of their projects with confidence, driving towards positive outcomes and enduring success.

Great sharing Fasil, as usual. Can you also remind us the 12 principles highlighted by PMI?

You don't need a position of authority to be a leader!
