Democratising health and safety – empowering your frontlines?

Now there is an interesting thought but, what does it mean like, you know, are we actually talking about "Accessibility" diversity and inclusion for all or more like a beauty contest where you can only ask the opinion of the mirror on the wall "who is the fairest of them all" ?

What about all those production-line workers, the DSE operators behind the front-lines, suffering presenteeism simply due to over-exposure to their, out of the box, standard sub-optimally Colour Contrast Calibrated display screens provided by their employer?

Nearly three decades since employers duty of care in Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER Act) came into force ensuring operators could make "reasonable adjustments" not just for their comfort but, to mitigate the risks from lack of control and "repetitive stress injuries" resulting in fatigue, increased error rates, mishaps or worse, so called, accidents?

Perhaps display screen equipment is perceived as non-toxic, inert, rather like Asbestos in it's day, a wonderful universal super-product, a harmless boon in the construction industry ?

If only we knew then what we know now and the same goes for DSE in the 21st Century, any exposure may cause predictable risk of injury and certainly, over-exposure will foreseeably result in 3D binocular stress related visual adaptations or vision loss.

Of course, the likelihood of being prosecuted for failure to comply with DSE Accessibility Regulations are pretty remote nevertheless, the costs in terms of presenteeism and 20% lost productivity or one day a week accounts for at least £4,000 in wages alone and, presenteeism will also result in presentation of longer latency non-communicable diseases enforcing an average six weeks off on sick leave for treatment / rehabilitation if, they come back at all.

So, what to do ? Simple'sss, "DSE Accessibility Fit Testing" with the Score My Screen on-line tool, only takes up to '90' seconds and if found the inaccessible, use the companion DSO (Display Screen Optimiser) in compliance with ISO 30071.1 DSE Colour Contrast Calibration Accessibility Standard - easy peasy, regulatory job done and potentially recovered 20% lost productivity if not more having augmented accessibility to the employees DSE.
