Democracies under threat

We are delighted to invite you?to our event series in the fall, where we shed light on a worrying development:

• Democracies around the globe are increasingly under threat.
• In many countries, populists are gaining ground, polarization is increasing, and voters often fail to vote.
• Public intellectuals are debating the prospects for post-democratic politics.
• At the same time, authoritarian regimes are seeing a resurgence.

What is driving these trends? And what can be done to reverse them?

This is the main topic of our series, which consists of three events, beginning with a lecture (in German) by?Wolfgang Sch?uble of CDU Deutschlands, who provides a political-historical framework of the topic, followed by a talk by experimental psychologist Steven Pinker of Harvard University, who discusses the role of rationality for democratic societies.

We will conclude with our annual?Forum for Economic Dialogue, where experts from various fields will discuss the topic from both a political and an economic perspective. Our keynote speakers are?writer and The Nobel Prize laureate Herta Müller?and democracy expert?Daniel Ziblatt?of 美国哈佛大学 . Further speakers include Jason Brennan?of 美国乔治敦大学 , Hélène Landemore of 耶鲁大学 , Silja H?usermann?of University of Zurich ,?Hans-Joachim Voth?of UZH Department of Economics , Natasha Wunsch of Université de Fribourg/Universit?t Freiburg , and David Yanagizawa-Drott of UZH Department of Economics .
