Dementia Trials Ireland: Improving the lives of those at risk of, or living with, dementia.

The Dementia Trials Ireland, HRB CTN (Dementia Trials Ireland; DTI) is paving the way for a future where every person in Ireland living with, or at risk of, dementia has access to clinical trials. Led by Professors iracema Leroi and Sean Kennelly is a multidisciplinary network bringing together experts from geriatric medicine, psychiatry, neurology, neuroimaging, biostatistics, and bioengineering. Their shared mission is to transform dementia research in Ireland and expand opportunities for participation in innovative clinical studies.

With a strong focus on broadening the national dementia trials portfolio, DTI is committed to conducting high-quality studies that address key dementia-related challenges. The network is actively working to attract international and industry-sponsored trials while securing funding for investigator-led research. Importantly, these trials span all stages and subtypes of dementia, ensuring inclusivity and relevance for patient populations.

A key pillar of DTI’s work is building a skilled, research-proactive clinical workforce. By training physicians in trial design and methodology, the network is fostering a sustainable research ecosystem. Additionally, DTI is also proactively working on the development of dementia ‘trial ready cohorts’ in support of enhanced trial sponsor engagement and trial activity.

Crucially, people with lived experience of dementia play an integral role in DTI’s development. Through strong public and professional engagement, the network is raising awareness and ensuring that research is shaped by those it seeks to benefit. Collaboration is also central to its approach, with DTI aligning closely with HRB-supported clinical research groups such as the HRB- Trials Methodology Research Network Ireland , PPI network IGNITE and us at the NCTO as well as Clinical Research Facilities (https://ncto.ie/clinical-research-facilities-centres/) across the country.
