Detection features also receive solid endorsement and enable video doorbells to operate as a security solution. Notably, 52% say long battery life is a must-have. Some users and use cases do not support wired doorbell options – particularly for renters who may not be allowed to make such changes to their properties. For this segment, battery life for a power-intensive product like a video doorbell can be a major satisfier/dissatisfier.
Desired features for smart cameras show similar patterns. For cameras, Parks Associates also tested the desire for control of multiple cameras from a single dashboard, as camera owners are particularly likely to own more than one single device. 46% say this feature is a must-have. Manufacturers may spur repeat purchases by marketing the ease of unified control of all cameras from the same app.
Video doorbell desire video clips only with motion detected or when the doorbell is pushed. Smart camera owners more often want non-stop recording.
Demand for 24/7 recording has declined since mid-2020. This may be related to the cost of video service options, as consumers look to cut spending amid high inflation in 2022.
